Hey guys , is it just me or the ChatGPT 4o (the free version) keeps on crashing … and if it does not crash it just takes a lot of time to load and the voice feature just doesn’t load … it takes a lot of time to load and then it just says connection failed even tho my wifi is working perfectly fine !!
I’m using the plus version in a browser. No voice, just keyboard input. Freezes and/or crashes multiple times in a session. And is super slow. Very frustrating, particularly as I’m paying for it.
I’ve been using a custom gpt on their website with chrome. It has worked fine for weeks. But in the last 2 days, I can only run 2 prompts before chrome says the tab ran out of memory.
To make sure there was nothing odd with my gpt, I restarted chrome, logged in, started a basic 4o chat session. I oasted in a measley 7000 character paragraph and asked ChatGTP to help refine the message. It got 90% of the way through and crashed the tab with the same out of memory error.
I repeated the test with edge browser as well and it also crashes on a basic chat.
Did OpenAI make a change in the last couple days? This is making a critical work project impossible.
The problem is caused by previous chats (displayed in the left tab) that ChatGPT has not optimized to minimize memory usage. As a result, the more chats you have stored, the more memory any new conversation will start off with.
For someone like me who uses ChatGPT daily for work and has accumulated hundreds of chats, it has become nearly impossible to continue a conversation without encountering high memory usage. Google Chrome’s maximum tab memory is around 2.2GB, and reaching this limit causes significant slowdowns and potential crashes.
Currently, even a brand new, empty chat session takes up around 350MB of tab memory. This indicates that the memory footprint of previous chats is substantial and affects the performance of new conversations.
OpenAI needs to optimize the memory usage of previous, unopened chats to prevent them from consuming excessive resources during active sessions. This optimization is crucial for users who rely on ChatGPT for extended and frequent use.
As a temporary workaround, when you notice the chat slowing down and sense an impending crash, you can open a new tab and continue the same conversation there. This approach resets the tab memory without losing the conversation. However, this is only a temporary fix, as the tab memory will increase rapidly with each new prompt.
In summary, optimizing the memory usage of previous chats is essential to improve the overall performance and user experience. I hope this information helps both users understand the issue and developers at OpenAI identify and resolve the problem efficiently.
I completely agree, and I hope OpenAI can quickly fix this issue. this past week, as someone who uses ChatGPT for work extensively, I’ve been seeing an unusual amount of “Out of Memory” crashes this week, and its impeding my work efficiency. Even in new chats, this issue appears to come quickly.
I’m wondering if this is a bug directly connected to the new model GPT-4o, as this is the first time this bug has become a recurring issue for me. I might try strictly using 4 Turbo in a new chat, and see if this problem continues.
Yesterday, I tried deleting all my old chats. Wiped the slate clean. Doesn’t fix it. It still blows up the RAM on the tab and I can only execute 2-3 prompts before it crashes. Maybe deleting doesn’t really delete? I did not select the archive option.
Memory usage reaches incredible levels, the browser freezes and crashes, the problem continues in different browsers, completely deleting the chat history or clearing the browser cache does not work, after a few chats the RAM increases again, this problem started yesterday for me, I was using it without any problems before.
The problem persists, high RAM usage resulting in browser freezing and crashing
browser error 4? crashpad? high cpu?
i’m using the paid version, same here crashes all the time, very slow, the continue generating button crashes or doesn’t display, press continue and often crashes or starts from the beginning again in the same response window. severely wasting my time and becoming unuseable.
I’m using the paid version and with every prompt it crashing now. What is going on?
I’m on their Enterprise / Edu version (We just switched over to Edu on the 19th) and I’m having the same issue. It started about a week and a half ago.
Curious to see if we will ever get an answer…
Yeah, this is getting a bit unacceptable. we are paying for this service and not getting what we pay for. Maybe it’d be time to talk to a fraud lawyer and go after openai. they are scamming people left and right forcing them to pay for features and then not allow them to use them. In the US that falls under falsle advertising and fraud.
Still happening. I need to close and reopen the window almost eveytime if I want to get an answer.
The solution that worked here was: go to ChatGPT settings, select “General,” and choose “Archive all chats.” If you need to reuse a chat, use the Chrome extension “ChatGPT History Search” to find the desired chat (don’t forget to click “find all chat” to search through all chats). Then, unarchive only the chats you want to reuse.
This is what worked for me as a bandaid until OpenAI make the product usable.
This is what my ChatGPT told me to do and it worked.
Use Incognito Mode or Private Browsing: Opening ChatGPT in an incognito or private window may help limit stored session data from previous chats, as each session is “new” and has no memory of previous conversations.
I found, as long as you don’t scroll through the entire chat history on the sidebar, it doesn’t load them. Think my tab started at 190mb, but as soon as I scrolled all the old chats it shot up into the GBs.
The other options are to delete or archive the chats, or make a local copy then delete.
For the OP, yes I get lots of instances of the browser timing out and the occasional crash, this isn’t anything new to GPT, it’s been an issue since I started using it around a year ago. The longer the chat, the worse it gets. Then eventually the chat will reach maximum size and stop working.
