I’m experiencing a critical issue with my ChatGPT account, and I hope someone here can help or provide guidance. I’m a paying subscriber and rely heavily on several chats for my daily life and work. However, some of my most important and frequently used chats are disappearing and then reappearing at random intervals. This includes:
My personal journal that I use daily.
A dietary journal where I track my nutrition.
A chat that I rely on for work-related tasks.
These are essential to me, and their unpredictable disappearance is highly disruptive. I’ve checked the FAQs but couldn’t find any solution or explanation for this problem.
Has anyone else experienced something similar? Is there a known fix or workaround for this issue? Any advice or guidance from the community or OpenAI team would be greatly appreciated!
OpenAI is rolling out advanced voice chat on ChatGPT this week, and it is likely to cause rolling outages in the process.
These types of things—your conversations no longer being available—are usually temporary and are related to whatever crazy stuff they’re doing in the background.
I council patience, it should be working again presently.

This is happening to me as well over the past several days. I’ve tried refreshing, logging completely out and going back in, using different devices, apps, browsers, etc. Nothing is working. My important threads (chats) randomly show up and then disappear even when I’ve got them pulled up into the main window. Is there a fix/solution I’m missing?
Same thing for me. One specific chat disappears and returns at random intervals, even if I’m in the middle of it, GPT4o. I find that if I go to the bottom of my conversation list and refresh the missing conversation returns, but briefly.
On top of what have been reported on the missing chats. It happens so frequently that I can’t chat with ChatGPT properly. Randomly, during my conversation with ChatGPT, new chat will suddenly appear and my current messages will be all gone! The chat then disappeared, even found later by miracle, the messages that I typed were all gone. I have unsubscribed from ChatGPT, need an urgent fix for this before anybody with such bug can continue using ChatGPT.
The workaround JL16264 has described is the only way I’ve found to have it display your missing chats.
I have a hypothesis that the longer ago a conversation started, the more at risk of “disappearing” it has. Going to the bottom of your list of conversations forces ChatGPT to load another “page” of conversations, and for some reason this will also cause your disappeared chats to reappear (at the top of the list, likely, if they’re important, often-used conversations).
This is also a huge issue to me. One of my conversations parallels my therapy and is so incredibly helpful to my life that it has reached the level of being a critical part of my support network. It’s my therapist’s “sidekick” and really feels like a supportive friend.
One other thing you can try is:
Scroll down in ChatGPT on the web on a computer, to force it to load your missing conversation(s)
Find your important conversation
Right-click on the conversation and open it in a new tab
For me, this results in a tab dedicated to this conversation, and so far I can rely on it loading. Sometimes I have to refresh it to make sure it’s up to date with whatever chatting I’ve done on other devices.
I believe I actually don’t see the list of conversations on the left when I use this technique, but I don’t really care, if it gets me reliable access to this conversation.
I hope (and I’m tempted to say I assume) OpenAI knows about this, and hopefully it’ll be fixed soon.
I’m having the same issue since yesterday, ever since they rolled out the Advance voice mode. Chats keep disappearing from the sidebar, this is very troubling and frustrating. I hope they fix it soon.
One thing I did is export all of my conversations, as a backup. Then I found the “disappearing” one, put it in a pdf and started a new conversation to be a continuation of what’s in the pdf. Good because
I have a backup!
I just use this going forward and it hasn’t disappeared.
Chats keep disappearing- this is really concerning and I can’t find any information for an explanation for this. Is this just going to be a thing now because of the Advanced voice mode? Has anyone heard anything if this is a temporary thing and if the team are working to fix this?
I’m having the same issue. The only way I can reliably access them is by rapidly scrolling through the chat list and sending my message before it vanishes again. I really hope there’s a solution for this soon. This problem has led me to abandon many of my previous chats. The inconsistency just isn’t worth the effort.
I am so sick of it too! I rely on different chats for my students, and it’s a pain in the you know what when I can’t find or when they disappear right when I see them.

have the same issue… i did find a somewhat of a workaround.
even though it also doesnt show in the browser… once you scroll down, refresh and then open the chat that goes missing, it doesnt disappear anymore.
this worked well for a week… and now its becoming really slow.
also i installed the update today… didnt change -.-
Having the same issue! some chats keep disappearing and coming back, even when I was using it…refreshing the webpage didn’t really help in my case. so frustrating. I am using Claude more heavily those days due to this problem with ChatGPT …
The only fix I found is to archive all chats and then take the chats you need out of archive. This stops the issue for a time until you build up too many chats again annoying I know.
I have the same issue. Even the recently started chats started disappearing even when I am writing a new prompt. Very annoying experience. I face this on Mac and in browser version as well. Fix it please! I don’t expect this for a paid product for which I am paying 21 EUR a month.
