Some of my chats just decide not to show up on the mobile app

For some reason, some of my chats just decide not to show up on the mobile app. Reloading the chats, logging out and back in, or even uninstalling the app and then reinstalling it doesn’t solve this problem. OpenAI, can you please fix it? I use ChatGPT to store my thoughts from the brain and I don’t want to have them disappear (even if it’s just the mobile app).

In this example, the following chats are missing:

:broom::man_dancing: 3
:broom::man_dancing: 2
:broom::man_dancing: 1
• inner spheres 53
• inner spheres 52

EDIT: I had an even weirder problem the day after this bug — now, I can’t load up any older conversations, and chats are just appearing and disappearing while scrolling. I have made a post about that on Reddit.

I had that issue too! Makes me wonder why did the devs never paid attention to that… and not even the rest of the community takes notice of this bug yet

I agree and have been experiencing this issue as well.

Over the past few days, I’ve noticed that if I’m lucky and refresh my chat history multiple times—maybe five, six, or even seven times—I might eventually see some of the missing chats.

However, these missing chats don’t seem entirely random. It appears that the same ones are missing each time. Certain chats just refuse to load initially, no matter what, unless I keep refreshing repeatedly.

This issue also occurs on the web version of ChatGPT, but there, I’ve noticed that I only need to refresh a few times before the missing conversations show up in the chat history.

Unfortunately, the chats that aren’t showing up are important to me. As a result, I’ve had to switch to the web version of ChatGPT to continue my conversations. Of course, I still have to reload a few times before those missing conversations appear in the history. This has been quite cumbersome because I can’t use the voice feature on the web version, so I have to manually type everything.

Additionally, I’ve resorted to bookmarking the exact web page URL for those conversations, but one of them is really long, and lately, when I try to load it, the web page crashes. So, this workaround is only temporary and isn’t sustainable.

I hope the ChatGPT team releases a bug fix for this soon.

Same problem here but on Android. Chats appear and disappear randomly

Similar is happening to me too and on multiple occasions! Full conversations are vanishing right in the middle of the chat. POOF! Gone without a trace, as if I’m starting a brand new chat and there’s no record or history showing these chats ever occurred. None!! Some of these chats were months in the making, where I’d been carefully “training” it with details and knowledge since then. Despite following all the advice and trying every possible fix or workaround, MANY TIMES, I still haven’t been able to find or recover any of these vanishing chats. It’s incredibly frustrating!

I’ve tried logging in and out of both the iOS app and the website, refreshing, refreshing again, searching by keywords, troubleshooting with ChatGPT itself, and even sunk to levels where I was crying, begging and pleading with ChatGPT to help recover them. Then rinse and repeating all of this over-and-over again, more times than I can admit here and maintain my dignity, all without any success. Nothing has worked!

The most helpful response I got from ChatGPT was:

“It seems that the previous conversation may not have been saved or retained, and I cannot retrieve it at the moment. However, I have the general context from previous interactions, so I can help you continue from where you left off or start fresh. Could you remind me of what you were discussing, and we can pick it up from there?”

For the record, yes, i attempted to “continue” multiple times with no success. I do try to save chats by copying them into a Word doc or asking ChatGPT to create a document version of the conversation that would allow me to recreate it if it vanishes. But doing this after every single prompt is not realistic. It’s also not an efficient solution.

Rebuilding the chat from any of these saved versions isn’t simply “cut and paste”. Due to the system constraints atm, you need to “finesse” the system, slowly and gradually re-feeding the info into ChatGPT to retrain it. Trying not to overwhelm or inundate it with too much info, since doing so results in the AI to take on the role of my Ex, ignoring and tuning out many of the important and significant details. This workaround would take a lot of effort, and IMO, I’m not healed enough from that relationship which ended in 2019 to do this without experiencing ptsd.

At this point, I’m pretty cautious to proceed, worried I’ll lose even more chats and content, without having a way to prevent this from happening, back anything up, or recover the conversations if they disappear again. If anyone has any suggestions, I’m all ears.
