Still having problems creating Download link to generated word doc inside custom GPT.
Suggested workaround doesn’t work in my case.
My GPT asking user questions, based on doc files from the knowledge, then takes from knowledge the final word document template, replaces the place holders with user answers and generates the final word document.
Then I’m getting the error generating Download link, despite the document having been created.
When I asked GPT to check the file size of the generated file, it got an error too.
The template file size is 81 Kb, maybe there is size limit for generated files ?
p.s. doing the same in regular ChatGPT conversation, using GPT-4o, send the system prompt of custom GPT in the message and attaching template doc works fine - all questions have been asked, doc generated and download link too.
I created a new custom GPT w/o PII with same prompt, knowledge and settings and… surprisingly it started to create the download link to created file (even when I brought back to the knowledge the original data file).
In parallel the original GPT had a problem creating the link. And in addition, it shows Error messages when I tried to Update it. So, to save the time I just deleted it.
I don’t know what underlying technology used to run Custom GPTs, but it looks like my original GPT was created corrupted.
So, from my experience, I would suggest to create a new instance of GPT in such case.
I agree it’s junk. It produces lots of errors in analysis and then it suddenly forgets what it was doing and starts doing the whole process wrong. I get lots of errors processing data and it takes forever to process a single question. I won’t bother paying $20 for nothing.
After banging my head over this wall for a day I came out with the interesting workaround . The idea is that when you ask GPT to generate the file it provides the link to the file but “forgets” to actually generate it, hence “File not found”. My idea was that by asking it to do something with the file I can force it to actually generate them. The first thing which came to mind was ZIP. So now in my instructions for the custom GPT I ask it to generate the files I need as before, but then I ask it to ZIP those files! To zip them it must actually generate them first! I play with it for an hour and the workaround does the trick so far. Hope it helps somebody. I am curious to know.

I was having the same problem having GPT provide a downloadable excel file. It would provide a link that would go nowhere. Tried the ‘zip trick’ konste mentioned and that also didn’t work. I told GPT ‘that also results in a broken link error. Any idea why you wouldn’t be able to provide a downloadable document?’ To which GPT o4-mini-high responded, ‘It looks like the viewer needs the sandbox: prefix to access files. Please try this link instead:’. The link it provided then DID work. Maybe you need to ask it to make sure and use the sandbox: prefix, whatever that is.
I am trying to download a buildpack for a project on 4o and it keeps telling me that it has a 100% effective way to get me a link for download. It was suggesting google drive, wetransfer and dropbox. It must have told me that it was 100% positive the download would work 10 times or so more. It has been multiple days and I can’t get it to work. It did create 2 download links that did not work. Now it is telling me it using pCloud. It keeps telling me the problem isn’t GPT but the other providers. Any solutions? It doesn’t seem like there are but I am hoping.
