Two days ago I received an email that my API access will be cutoff next week if I don’t purchase pre-paid credits. I currently have a significant amount in credit grants, can those be used?
As you can imagine I do not want to purchase credits, until I’ve used up my free credits. Has anyone dealt with this?
@PaulBellow I just ran a test call today, which is my switchover date, and received a quota limit error:
openai.RateLimitError: Error code: 429 - {'error': {'message': 'You exceeded your current quota, please check your plan and billing details. For more information on this error, read the docs: https://platform.openai.com/docs/guides/error-codes/api-errors.', 'type': 'insufficient_quota', 'param': None, 'code': 'insufficient_quota'}}
Does this mean that all of the Credit Grants I have are useless now? I received a substantial amount for my startup that it looks like I won’t be able to use, which is a huge bummer.
Thanks for the help! I’m on Usage Tier 5 and I paid a few end-of-month invoices like normal prior to receiving these credits, and since then have paid nothing because my credits were being deducted as expected.
I did reach out to help.openai.com several times but to no avail.
The usage page, on the right side under the circular monthly limit graph, should have an accounting of all credits. You should be able to view any credits you have or had, along with their expiration date. The expiration dates seem universally adjusted to the end of the month (which we haven’t reached yet).
@_j Yup I’m seeing all of my credits from the Credit Grants there and the expiration dates are all in 2025. Unfortunately, that still doesn’t explain why I received a quota limit error this morning after running a test call despite $1000+ in credits available on my account.
Reiterating Paul’s point from earlier, previously granted credits carry over.
The expectation is that you should not be getting blocked if you have existing credits in the account (even if they’re free credits).
There have been some reports of an initial delay following adding credits.
@kevin37 If you’re still seeing hitting the 429 error while your credits seem valid, please shoot me a DM with your email/support ticket numbers, and I’ll try to take a look.
@adjokic my “Credit balance” is now updated! Thanks for chiming in.
I think a quick 30 second fix here could be to add a note to the ominous “Action required: Upcoming changes to your OpenAI API billing” email drips to mention this delay.
