Login fails in iOS and macOS app

I also have the above mentioned error message (in German).

My physical location is close to Frankfurt, Germany, I am not using a VPN but I was using Apple Relay usually which I now disabled for a test, did not help.

This is since logging out of the ChatGPT app (latest version) on my Macbook Air M1 running MacOS Sonoma.

I was logged in before on this Macbook with my (only) OpenAI account, paid plan, GPT-Plus user. Should have never logged out I guess…

Rebooted Macbook, removed ChatGPT app and all config files with AppCleaner, reinstalled ChatGPT from latest image, tried a different network on the macbook, tried mobile network, disabled Apple Relay - always the exact same error message.

I am still able to log in to OpenAI / ChatGPT on the same Macbook when using the website, just not able to use the App anymore.

I am curios if you all have Apple Relay enabled or some other form of VPN and if OpenAI is (accidentally) blocking us for using Apple Relay. Could be anything else, just thinking out loud…

Anyways, it seem like this issue can’t be solved on user side - where are we supposed to open tickets for such issues? Not sure if posting here does help…

I have the same problem. After I changed my password and logged in from another new Mac device (Web Browser- Safari) I got kicked from my main device macOs desktop and got the 401 error. Seems like I can’t reach it using Safari either. But the new device that I just logged in is working. My account is plus and according to Help Center I should be able to use it in 2 devices without a problem.

I have tried it with Apple Relay enabled and disabled. Unfortunately wasn’t working for either one.

tried an older ChatGPT Desktop App version for Mac, also doesn’t work, looks like they have an issue in the backend.

can’t even select “Register with E-Mail” on the ChatGPT Mac-App, so I dont think it is account related, looks like they have a general issue but only showing up in the App, not in the webversion.

won’t log out of my iOS app as I bet I can’t log in after that again lol.

It is quite bizarre though since if I use Firefox from my iOS devices does not work as well…. Although I can insert the username…
When I use a desktop intel based Mac it works from Firefox…
So I have no issues with my account I have issues with iOS devices.
By the way I opened a ticket this morning let’s see what they say

Additional news my colleague has the same problems as described above on any iOS or silicon device from apple but with android everything works smooth so we may expect some resolution from apple…
Still not clear if this happen outside EU

Same problem in Norway. Both on Mac OS app and iOS app.

Same thing happening here
Whats the fix?

The same thing happens to me since this morning with the app on iOs and MacOS (I don’t want to try it on Android, because when I logout I can’t log in again). However, I have no problems in the browser.

In my case the error is: 401, 8be7f77d4c29cfca-MAD, which appears when I click on one of the login options. I have already tried all kinds of solutions (e.g. reinstall).

If it is confirmed that it only affects Europe, it could be related to the fact that today the chatGPT memory has been activated in the EU.

That’s it
VPN to LA and works …

Same problem from Greece- try to login from iPhone

i confirm, germany is down. browser login works but both apps iOS and macOS nothing works.

So, there is alternative solution how to resolve. Since I was not able to log in and i am also in Europe; I connected by VPN to USA, logged in - which was possible, and once you are logged in, it will keep working even your VPN is down. It was necessary only for logging in

That fixes the issue. Appreciate it!

Same problem Italy since yesterday. Reinstall does not help.

I fixed it, use the app FreeVPN and choose USA (free 30 min) and then login.

Same issue for me on Mac M1, plus… you can’t close the application. You have to force-quit it.
Not tried a VPN for now…
