Hi!

An organization is like your own life: You were given it but you didn’t create it, you have to maintain it with fees or it will stop working, but you can share it with others, who will tend to consume from its resources.

When you create an OpenAI account, you should already have your own organization. This user interface in the upper-left of the platform site lets you choose a different organization:

You should be able to choose between your own and one you were invited to.

The only exception may be an unknown case where you created a login with a company domain and are connected to their enterprise. In that case, you wouldn’t want to be adding your own funds to your own organization anyway, because the email account and your ultimate access could be taken away by a third-party.

See if it isn’t just switching the org at the top that will show you your existing organization (that may not be funded with prepaid credits or useful yet).

The problem is that have my own domain (I’m a tech consultant), and I’ve been invited into an organization account.

I didn’t have the opportunity to create my own account as a private consultant, and I would like to create one to have my own credits.

There’s no “create new organization” button anywhere.

You are correct: there is no “create new organization” button anywhere.

It is not an entity you have control of creating more of on demand.

Upon creating any OpenAI account, you already should have your own API organization. If not, go to “start building” at top right if you have that instead of a gear icon, and complete the onboarding steps (although this actually just has you fill out info for the organization you already have.)

If you had no existing OpenAI account, not even from using ChatGPT in the past, perhaps there could be some pathway where if you directly accept an invitation by email, especially if it is an Enterprise administrator’s domain email that you log in through, you are merely added and you don’t get your own. I’ve not heard of that, though; just those that are already using the company domain and email as their login, and symptoms such as then being auto-invited to a ChatGPT Enterprise seat.

If you have absolutely used your “lifetime email and real phone number” as login, the only one you want to use, and have seen that you have no other selection than the organization you’ve been invited to in the drop-down, you could contact OpenAI support and say, “please create a new organization ID for my login XXX, as one was never created”. This is sometimes needed if you assign a new owner and they completely take the existing org away from you.

An additional reason for your own independent email login: consider - the one you are invited to as a contractor gets a lifetime ban, and they take down all the connected OpenAI accounts in that ban.

Fun trick: make a throwaway OpenAI account with a new email - have it send an “owner” invitation to you, and simply “take it”.
