I can't change my password. I don't receive the password reset email. I've been trying for over 2 weeks

I made the mistake of using continue with google option to signup for chatgpt originally so I don’t have a password. I just click “continue with google” if I need to login which is rare. This has worked perfectly, until it didn’t when I had an issue with my google account.

Long story short-

I need a password, but when I try and reset I don’t get the email. I’ve tried for weeks. I’ve seen posts about this before but no solution.

Here’s what I tried to do to get the password reset email through the login forgot password option, as obviously no option within account (over cause of 2 weeks not all at once EDIT: I put 3 but it was actually 2 weeks. That’s still a lot of time imo):

  • private window
  • deleting cache and trying in standard window
  • multiple difference browsers
  • multiple different computers
  • different physical locations
  • VPN/VPS services
  • logged into my google account on mobile as well just to make sure it isn’t asking for some authentication you only get on mobile

Nothing works. I don’t get the email.

I’m quite sure I never tried the reset password option before because all the emails relating to chatgpt have nothing to do with password reset when I checked, OR the reset password option never worked.

I don’t understand why I can’t change my email, but I can live with that, but I need to be able to change my password from whatever google authentication it’s set as.

Also:

  • No I dont have any 2fa option enabled or anything like that for chatgpt

  • No this has never happened before for any site I’ve ever used. Close to 30 different sites with with “continue with google” used, that I was able to change my password for. This is the only one that doesn’t work.

**EDIT - There isn’t a fix just a bug.

There was a post someone made with a solution that ultimately does nothing:

I kind of did the same. I’ll just go through these pointless list of steps I took to get the password reset email that does nothing.

  1. Opened private window then went to: https://platform.openai.com/login
  2. Clicked signup and then used the email I’ve been trying to sign in with
  3. It showed me an error about using a different authentication method.
  4. Since this error showed up I just went back to login screen and redid step 2
  5. Now it showed a message in red saying email already in use
  6. Went to email and I received a verify email msg from openAI. This will lead to an error regarding authentication.
  7. Then I went back to the sign in page in private window and put my email and hit forgot password as was the original step

I then received the email and changed password.

Again, this doesn’t do anything. You can’t use the password you changed it too as this error message shows up if you do:

The issue is there doesn’t seem to be anyway of changing from SWG when you’re inside. The only option that exists I can find is adding MFA which says to sign in with username and password first. I assume if I add it I’ll have Sign-in With Google on top a code I need to put in.

Also, this error message, “provider mismatch”, for what is essentially signing in with username password saved with another company, that doesn’t require MFA or even 2FA for their accounts doesn’t make much sense as I doubt the GPT sites authentication system even knows what the account security level is for each google account considering the state of the password reset system. Sign-in With Google shouldn’t be a requirement. It isn’t in any site I’ve ever used. This is especially annoying as the password was just changed through authentication from that same google account. This entire authentication process feels hacked together and Google is being used as the fallback.

Hi @l4wrion

When you sign up for ChatGPT using the “Continue with Google” option, your account is linked directly to your Google credentials.

This means that ChatGPT doesn’t store a separate password for your account; instead, it relies on Google’s authentication.

Trying to reset your password through ChatGPT won’t work because there’s no ChatGPT-specific password to reset.

Although you will see “Check Your Email” screen, you will not receive a link to recover or change the password, unfortunately.

You can read the HELP page the last paragraph after number 5.

This does nothing. The implementation of Google Sign-in seems to be broken. I just updated the post.

EDIT:

I’ll sum it up because I realised I wrote too much in the post.

I reset the password but that error message shows up when I try and sign in with new password. There is no option to change it in settings I can find only adding MFA which recommends signing in with password which you can’t do.

If you sign up with google sign-in option you can never change it because it seems to be added as an elevated authentication method like 2FA or MFA and with no option to change it for some reason. Google accounts only require password and username so I don’t know why this is the case and I don’t think the system even checks the account security of the google account or if that’s even possible. I’m not a programmer so I could be wrong but based on the error message and the process for password reset something isn’t implemented correctly.

No site I’ve used does this with Sign-in With Google.
