GPT freezes since the past week - can barely use it

GPT is becoming difficult to use. It freezes constantly.

I have brand new desktop with plenty memory and ram, so it can’t be the desktop.

Hey Mike - that definitely sounds rough, especially if it’s happening constantly.

Could you share a bit more context: are you using ChatGPT in a browser or the desktop app, and what action causes the freeze (sending a prompt, switching chats, generating something)?

A quick thing to try: clear cache/cookies, open ChatGPT in an incognito window, or test in a different browser. We also had a couple incidents as reported recently on the Status page, so it’s worth checking if the issue still happens after that.

I use GPT on a desktop. But even on a laptop or mobile, it just constantly freezes. It’s a little easier with text only output, but any html or code, even very small work freezes and hangs it.
I’ve tried different browsers, but it doesn’t seem to make much difference.
The issues started less than a week ago.

I’m a pro subscriber.

I’ve tried to work on gpt the whole day, and it’s impossible. It just never stops freezing. It’s completely unworkable. I have to shut it off and start it all over again every 5 minutes.

Yeah, that sounds exhausting, especially if it’s freezing every few minutes.

Since you’ve already tried different browsers and devices, a couple things that would help narrow this down:

  • Which model are you using when this happens?
  • Is it happening in all chats, or mostly in one specific long thread?
  • If it’s one chat in particular, is it a very long conversation?
  • Is this in a regular chat or inside a custom GPT?

Very long threads, especially with lots of HTML or code, can sometimes start to feel sluggish. If that’s the case, starting a fresh chat and pasting in only the necessary context can sometimes help.

Let’s narrow it down and see if there’s a pattern.

  • I’ve been using the Auto model.
  • It happens in all chats, but gets impossible in longer chats.
  • They don’t have to have any code. I have a thread with notifications for grants (text only) - and I can’t even load that thread…
  • It’s regular chats.

It doesn’t work starting a new fresh chat. The whole GPT is impossible to work with since around Friday last week or so. Everything freezes. The window takes forever to even load the history.

Emm, I have encountered the exactly same situation on my account since 3/11 update.

I have the same problem, i cannot be productive at all. Even just asking on small thing fans speed up chat gtp goes blank and fans keep going creazy for 5 or more minutes then chat appears and fans stop, the minute i try to type a reply or anything the fans starts again. i have pro account. this is annoying. How can you use something that takes you all day to use. its suppose to be a pleasure to use it. please please fix this fast. I have a gaming pc, powerful, it should have not reason to do the job, i tried in opera and chorme- same thing is happening. urgently fix this pls. i have to stop it otherwise pc fans keeps running forever sometimes the chat doesnt stop and appears , frustrating

I’m afraid that hasn’t been very helpful. Openai now relies on AI to give replies. This really annoys me… I’ve spent one hour back and forth with the AI support now and nothing improves.
I’ve been a subscriber since the early days and having AI take over support will definitely make me leave gpt. Have OPTIONAL AI support, not as some end-all support where you don’t know how to connect to a human.

  1. GPT freezes in any browser, on any device, and on any network (using it on mobile gives no better results. The mobile network is a completely different/separate from the desktop and laptop wifi network. Mobile data browsing provides same issues with constant freezing).

  2. The suggestions by AI support doesnt work

  3. The AI tries to blame it on VPN - but I don’t use or have VPN.

  4. The browser gives a CODE HUNG error

  5. I still think the error originates from gpt itself

The AI support just keeps asking more and more questions. Its not for me to solve, and spend a whole workday on this.

I posted previously that since two weeks GPT is constantly freezing [Error code: RESULT_CODE_HUNG] and you have to reload it to get any output. It behaves like there’s a script error.

This happens both on desktop, mobile or the app.

I’ve contacted support but I’m getting no reply and the issue remains.
