Error when purchasing credits by card: "too many requests, please slow down"

I’m having the same issue as well. Tried waiting a while, tried different browsers. Any idea what else to try?

I understand your frustration, but there is no one on the forum that can influence the way the payment systems operate, your best option is help.openai.com

For those who are having this issue as well currently, it seems that this just randomly happens from time to time, and the issue is with Stripe’s payment processing, not OpenAI. I see a lot of people were reporting it happening around ~2 weeks ago, and the solution for them was to just wait a while and try again. It’ll fix itself eventually

I’ve heard that people can get around the waiting by using a VPN, though I haven’t tried it.

The error code should be updated to say the issue was with the payment processing provider and to try again later, and/or a knowledge article on help.openai.com explaining this would be much appreciated

I don’t know why, but using a VPN actually worked. Thanks

It is annoying to see that OpenAI have not provided a lasting solution to this issue. I am currently faced with the same problem.

I changed cards and waited, but nothing worked. Then, I activated a VPN to New York and it was resolved on the first attempt.

May I ask what VPN you were using?

Different cards, different vpns, different accounts. Almost gave up. But this is what worked for me:
VPN + Another account + Another browser (edge) + Different billing address and different card.

Different everything in a nutshell.

i just tried to do the same thing and it doesn’t let me pay, either too many requests or card declined, even wrote to them on the chat box

Here’s what worked for me: got onto my phone, turned off wifi, logged into openai on my phone only using the cell network. It then accepted my payment method. I guess it really hated my wifi even when I used a VPN.

Same problem.
I have changed the browser and I still encounter it.
Does anyone have a solution to this problem?
Btw,why do we encounter this problem.
Just w8? or else.

Can confirm that this process worked perfectly. After multiple “slow down messages” on a desktop brower, followed the instrustions to open up on a cell phone after turning off wi-fi and was able to add funds.

I am having same issue from India. Tried multiple times with different browser and I am unable to pay for the subscription.

I was running into this same issue all morning, tried a few different browsers, cleared my cache, went incognito, etc.

The only thing that worked for me is the suggestion from above; access the billing page from a cell phone with wifi disabled. Not sure why that would be the case but hopefully it helps resolve the issue for others!

Also worked for me - thank you!!

It worked for me when I used my cell phone with no wi-fi.

Same thing happened to me. Fixed by using a VPN.

I can’t even get this to work on my phone via cell data (regardless of browser).

same worked here (Brazil): accessed from a mobile phone with no wi-fi

VPN SOLUTION: Ugh I ran into the same issue and could not solve it with any changing browsers, different card, waiting/reloading, etc. Based on the answers in this forum, connecting to a VPN seemed to fix it right up. I have no former experience with setting up a VPN but I was able to do the 7 day free trial through Surfshark which was fairly easy and then it worked immediately after I connected (just make sure to cancel right after). It wouldn’t let me share the link to how to download Surfshark and starting the free trial, but if you search “Surfshark support free trial” theres a link to an FAQ article titled “Do you offer a free trial?”
