Error when purchasing credits by card: "too many requests, please slow down"

Same issue just now. I was able to work around it with VPN.

Over 4 months and this is still an issue for ya’ll.

I can pay with my existing card, but I can’t add a new card.

Why do we have some suggestions from Support on here suggesting WE do something like open a case? When this many people are having the same issue is obviously some type of bug somewhere. VPN appears to be a workaround but thats very clunky and some of us aren’t using VPN nor want to esp for something silly like this. I can’t add my card desktop or mobile with no wifi.

I’ve had no luck here with mobile or VPN.

I am also trying to add new card (Add payment method) now and I get this message: “You’re making too many requests, please slow down.”.
I’m not making other requests, just trying to add a new credit card.
OpenAI service is not working because of payment, but I can’t add a card. My clients are calling and I don’t know what to do.

Here I am running into this issue yet again. VPN, clearing cache/cookies, different browsers, all don’t help me get around this issue. I’m glad I don’t use this in a production environment. I ping the Support chat every time this happens but it just randomly starts working again hours or days later with no explanation given.

It seems to me that even if you only try once and OpenAI’s server is overloaded they ding/temporarily blacklist you by IP the same way they would ding someone who has been spamming them.

If this is correct. If you get this error once. Wait 5 minutes, then try again using a different internet provider such as your cellphone service, or a VPN.

Get the same problem - even with a VPN and waited an hour. Do they want my money or not?

This is probably due to Plus Memberships reopening today and taking up the Stripe Rate limits…

Everyone has Rate limits… It should return to normal in a few hours.

Using a VPN worked immediately for me. I didn’t even have to refresh the page.

In my case my card worked when registering on GPT Plus without an issue, but when tried the same card on the API it didn’t take it.

Then I deleted the card, and tried re-entering from scratch, and getting “You’re making too many requests please slow down”.

This worked for me. I downloaded a new, separate browser, and ran my PIA vpn.

I tried the mobile phone network solution, disconnected wifi, but it gave me the same error . I don’t have a readily available vpn to try with . I will try again later.

This has been an issue with me too. I tried several CC. Three computers, 5 browser… comon’ man.

Does anyone work this board or even look at it? seems like this is a common issue and open ai is dragging their feet on a simple solution

+1 Turning on a VPN solved it for me

I had a similar issue. I read this forum topic and tried a few things mentioned that ultimately didn’t work for me:

  • used a different card for payment
  • switched browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Edge)
  • switched to a different OpenAI account
  • tried on a mobile device

The only solution for me was to turn on a VPN and refresh the page. I had a VPN readily available through my university. Several suggestions for alternative VPNs on this forum page seem to resolve this issue for others.

Hi All,
Had same issue myself and had tried different browsers, cache clearing, etc. What ended up working for me, as I think for a few others, was to turn off wifi on my phone and login to openai via cellular network. Entered my payment info and it worked first time out. Hope that helps someone out there!
