Is anyone else having issues getting ChatGPT web interface to generate DALL-E images on the Plus plan? It keeps telling me it is “currently unable to generate images directly” when prompted. Has something changed here in the last couple of days?

Weird! It looks like this is specific to one specific custom GPT. When I ask ChatGPT itself or two other custom GPTs, it seems to work… I confirmed that DALL-E is enabled in the custom GPT config…
(I have generated plenty of custom images with this custom GPT before today.)
This is just an armchair analysis, but if you have a long prompt it’s possible that the model ‘forgets’ its capabilities. You may need to remind it that it can generate images or visualize ideas using its dall-e tool.
I don’t think this is it, because the prompt in my screenshot was only 8 words. Here is another one:
When I remind it that it can generate an image, it apologizes for the confusion. When I then ask it to generate an image again, it sometimes claims to generate an image (but nothing is there) or once again goes back to saying it is unable to generate images.
I meant the instructions in your custom GPT
here some of the options
- you forgot to turn on DALL-E image generation in your custom gpt
- you turned it on, but you didn’t save it
- you’re editing one GPT but you’re accidentally using a different one
- your GPT instructions are confusing the model

Ah I see. custom GPT has been active for a few months and DALL-E image generation has been on the whole time. I checked it yesterday:

The instructions had not caused an issue since I created this GPT and the only recent change was adding one more file to the knowledge base; I can’t think of a reasonable explanation for why that new file would affect DALL-E image generation capabilities.

If you’re still looking for the cure, try disconnecting the VPN if you’re using it. It worked for me. I decided to give it a try since I noticed that ChatGPT doesn’t really agree with me using VPN. Hope it helps. But if not, hope you find the cure soon. It’s almost like the end of the world to me if I can no longer get DALL-E to generate images. It literally breathes for me these days
