ChatGPT Desktop App for Windows Won't Load After Update (November 25)

Hi everyone,

I need some help troubleshooting an issue with the ChatGPT desktop app for Windows. After the latest update on November 25, the app refuses to load and shows this error message:

“ChatGPT cannot load.
Check your network settings and try restarting ChatGPT.”

I’ve tried restarting the app and even reinstalling it, but the problem persists. My network connection is stable, and other apps work fine.

Has anyone else experienced this issue or found a solution? Any advice or steps I should try to fix this would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance for your help!

Welcome to the forum!

No.

I am using it both on Windows 10 and Windows 11 with no problems. Use it every day and even right now.

A few options

  • Use Task Manager to kill it.
  • Uninstall it then reinstall it.
  • From the Windows tray in the lower right of the Windows Desktop find the ChatGPT icon, open the menu and select Quit

I killed the process, reinstalled it – it didn’t help. :frowning:

If you are using a proxy, VPS or works/school firewall then that may be the issue. Try using your mobile phone as a hotspot and using it’s connection for your PC’s wifi connection and see if that works.

I feel your pain. :face_with_head_bandage:

More radical solutions.

  1. Win button + S` (Windows search)
  2. Enter ChatGPT
  3. Right click ChatGPT App
  4. Select App settings
  5. Then try what you think might work

More radical

  1. Being a Windows app it installs into ??? (Can not currently find it but I did find the directory about a week ago so know it exist).
  2. Check to make sure you see it listed there, then uninstall it
  3. Win button + S (Windows search)
  4. Enter ChatGPT
  5. Right click ChatGPT App
  6. Select Uninstall
  7. Then check the directory again and make sure all of the files are gone. Might be a hold over file that did not get properly deleted.

I don’t use a proxy.
Disconnected the laptop from LAN, connected it to a mobile hotspot—didn’t help.

Kaspersky Total Security disabled, and ChatGPT started working!
Enabled it again, and it still works. For some reason, it was blocking the connection, but now everything is fine.
THANK YOU!

Thanks for the feedback.

I can’t begin to tell you how many users find a solution then don’t share it.

Care if that is marked as the solution. Feel free to just click the solution icon for that reply. (Check mark in square)

I think you can put lots of Anti-Virus and home firewall products into the causal category. Unfortunately AI apps are new and AV can take time to respond to changes in use, which is slightly alarming.
