Starting from today, the Codex app not loading on Windows 10. It 100% the loads CPU, for about 30 minutes, and then nothing. Only the splashscreen with the logo is visible. I tried to reinstall, create a fresh .codex folder - nothing helped.
Codex CLI does work, btw.
Welcome to the forum!
You can discuss Codex-related issues here, but the official place to report them is the OpenAI Codex GitHub Issues.
I had ChatGPT do a quick search and while there was no direct match for your issue, there are many open issues that are similar or possibly the same, e.g.
It’s worth searching existing issues and if you find one that matches give it a thumbs up; if nothing aligns, open a new report with clear reproduction details.

Same behaviour from the app here, but i’m on Windows 11 with the latest updates.
The same thing for Windows 11. Around a week ago everything was perfect. No changes, no reinstall were done until i got this problem. It’s just the eternal loading screen. After some clear of cashe elements of UI appears for a 1-2 seconds and then again go away under loading screen
The same thing for win10, i have update codex
it helped me:
- kill the process completely
- delete the folder:
Windows: %APPDATA%/Codex or .codex
Mac/Linux: ~/.codex - restart
Thanks, that worked. But all the work was lost, unfortunately. I wish there were a fix without a profile reset.
Unfortunately no changes. UI still appear in a few seconds and the go away. Maybe i doing something wrong. I don’t have exactly APPDATA/codex but i have APPDATA/code. I looked the files inside and seems like my last sessions, so no doubts about that it’s codex folder. Maybe i am doing wrong something?
P.s. i am using codex just in windows without any virtualization throw linux or etc. Downloaded from Microsoft Store
Sorry to hear that, did you check the OS trash can?
You should have backed it up. ![]()
Many advanced users have a daemon running that backs up the changes to the directory for later analysis. ![]()
Just downloaded codex on Windows 11 and I’m facing this problem. Guess it’s my luck to enter with a buggy version update. I don’t want to apply that workaround which deletes all sessions.
Workaround didn’t work for me. Still stuck.
Тоже самое, удалил все файлы связанные с Codex . Переустановил Codex, не помогло…
Не получается так-же запустить через VS Code:(

Have you tried using an earlier version of the VSCode Codex extension, that at times helps. Can not guarantee success but it is an option.
I experienced the same problem today. Here’s what fixed it for me:
- I made a backup of the .codex folder and then erased it the folder in {user}/.codex.
- Restarted and reauthenticated then exited app
- Copied just the session folder and session-index.json back into the new .codex folder
On restarted Codex all my previous sessions were displayed
Hope this helps
Note: I am not an OpenAI employee.
Normally if a problem such as this is wide spread it would have been reported more and seen OpenAI staff report it for the status page.
You should consider opening a Codex issue at the OpenAI GitHub Codex issues tab.
This looks like a Windows app startup issue. Since the logs can contain some debug information and also some personal or environment-specific information, so can I request someone in the thread to please open a ticket at support@openai.com and include:
- %LOCALAPPDATA%\Codex\Logs from the affected launch
- Codex app version
- Windows version/build
- Any Windows Event Viewer errors around the launch time
As a workaround, try fully quitting Codex from Task Manager, then rename %APPDATA%\Codex to %APPDATA%\Codex.backup and relaunch. I’d avoid deleting %USERPROFILE%\.codex unless it’s backed up, since that can contain config/auth/session state.
Once you have a support ticket, please share the case ID or case subject in this forum thread so we can track it internally.
When I copy the sessions folder and session-index.json, I have this problem again. So the issue is with the session loading, apparently.
Yup same issue - windows 11
Same. I just wanted to come back to Open AI products but I can’t because it is doesn’t work ![]()
