I have the same problem. Hopefully it will be fixed soon.
My second post in the thread just to say another day and still experiencing this. Major usability problem, OpenAI. C’mon.
I am wondering if a possible temporary workaround would be to create a generic custom GPT whose only real customization is removing the checkmark that lets it use the conversation for training. Has anyone tried this? I might give it a shot later when I have time.
I have convo history off on my work laptop at all times as I’m not authorized to be sharing work code with an LLM, and I suspect many others are in a similar boat.
I started having this problem today.
I started having this problem today too.
+1 here also, this issue started yesterday for me, chat history off. No solution yet.
Same problem here starting today. Given OpenAI’s history so far this feels like a big red flag…
I can confirm this. Since 2 days happening for me as well.
Yea, it does somehow. But we will see.
Updating the thread. As of 10PM GMT, the problem seems to be solved from my end. Awesome job OpenAI team. This is a really fast turnaround. Hope your product team stops whichever changes reset the chat history preference. Those are the ones that cause issues with memory/context.
Yes, seems fixed now. Thanks alot.
Edit: Back again with:
Sorry, conversations created when Chat History is off expire after 6 hours of inactivity. Please start a new conversation to continue using ChatGPT.
I’ve gotten this same error more than 10 times within the past hour using my paid account with chat history off. I’ve tried both 3.5 and 4.
The issue does not appear to be fixed. Please help, OpenAI! I need to do my work!
Problem’s still there for me, unfortunately. I’ve been noticing a pattern where the problem goes away for a while, only to come back shortly thereafter.
OpenAI mods, please move or keep this question here.
My error actually has now changed. Instead of conversation key not found error, I have started getting a new error. Now every 2nd message gives this error below, even if my 2nd message is within seconds of the first message.
“!Sorry, conversations created when Chat History is off expire after 6 hours of inactivity. Please start a new conversation to continue using ChatGPT.”
I have experienced the exact same issue for the past 2-3 days, and it’s frustrating as heck. It happens in either version of ChatGPT and in either browser. I have cleared my cache, and I don’t use a VPN. It’s the same issue, and only occurs with the chat history off. I cannot tell you how frustrating it is to report the problem to OpenAI, only to get that canned response and then no assistance, and then when I followed up the next day, they send me the same canned response. I hope they are working on a solution, but this has not been a very positive customer experience.
Issue still persists. Using ChatGPT Plus. After 1st message, I see “Conversation key not found. Try starting a new conversation” this message.
After I clear chat history, it works for 1st message and issue reappears.
Same here ! Since yesterday, I just can’t get a conversation past the first message. Tested on different browsers, no VPN. If you have the same problem, don’t sweat it, it’s on OpenAI side there’s a problem, not on yours. I hope they get this fixed as soon as possible !
Looks like I have joined the “Conversation key not found. Try starting a new conversation.” party
I was encountering the same problem. I solved it for myself through trial-and-error.
In my case, it was related to an extension, “Privacy Badger”, blocking access to some endpoint needed for the new WebSocket implementation OpenAI rolled out recently to Chromium-based desktop browsers. Privacy Badger extension wasn’t allowing access to endpoints required by the recent changes OpenAI made on the backend.
It was impacting Google Chrome Dev, Brave, and Microsoft Edge Dev, in my case. I did not test other browsers. But this making the change in the 2nd image below solved the issue for all three browsers.
See below for the problematic settings and the settings that fixed it, respectively. Note, these settings were seen while clicking the extension while actively logged in on the chat.openai.com website.

I doubt that this will fix the problem for all users in all cases. There are likely other scenarios that trigger this error.
However, it might be worth trying this fix for users that have the Privacy Badger extension enabled.
I also have 100% reproducible. First prompt works. Second always fails
