Cannot Add files to a Project

Hello,

I am trying to add files to a project, but every time I do, it comes up with the following message; “Oops, an error occurred! Try again”

However, when I click “Try again” nothing happens, and when I try to reload the project I keep encountering the following: “Oops, an error occurred! Try again” which results in me having to delete the project as it becomes unusable and inaccessible.

I tried the following:

1 I have cleared the browser cache, but this has failed to resolve the issue…

  1. File size is within the limit (2MB) and file types are acceptable.

  2. I have tried uploading on different days and nights at different times, so I do not think it is a server issue, particularly as I can attach and upload files to normal ChatGPT messages without any issues.

  3. Data within the files is fine and has not been corrupted.

  4. I am using a Chrome browser.

  5. I am using ChatGPT plus plan.

  6. I have disabled the firewall, but this did not resolve the issue.

  7. I have tested adding files to another project, but I keep running into the same unresolved issue.

  8. I have tried zipping files… Does not resolve issue.

  9. I have cleared memory… Does not resolve issue.

Does anyone have any idea(s) what the issue might be?

And many thanks in advance :))

As you have tried also with zipping the files too, there does seem to be a problem. I know from before that, if I had the file open (e.g. a PDF or XLSX) while trying to attach, I would often get this problem…so always shut the file down first.

However, I am also getting similar downstream problems: I manage to get the files to attach but the chat can only seem to access the Project files once and then lose the connection (and I then have to delete and reattach the files).
Even so, when it does any processing on the files, it now seems to not be able to create an images inline or downloadable, or PDFs or anything. I have tried Firefox, Edge, cleared caches etc… I have also raised a ticket but not heard anything. Very annoying.

Same here man. I am also facing the same issue. But the issue appears in Free Accounts, Plus Accounts, Team Accounts, everywhere.

Thanks for the reply, and thank you for letting me know what you have tried to resolve the issue, so far whenever I’ve tried to upload files they have always been closed… Like you, I think my next port of call will be to contact support, raise a ticket and see what they say… If you hear from them before I do, please post their response and I will make sure to do the same.

Thanks for replying, and thank you for letting me know that you also have same issue, as I did wonder if the problem was on my end, because when I searched the forum for answers I could not find any posts related to this specific issue.

In a way it is good to know the problem is prevalent across all types of accounts, and that others are running into the same issue, as this would seem to suggest it is not a “me” problem lol , but rather a glitch/bug in the software.

If you find a solution or hear anything else, please post here with your findings

I cannot say this is an error I have run into personally, I have had a different issue though which was reaching the maximum file limit of adding files to the project folder is capped at 20, Doesn’t matter on size of the file or contents of the file or memory usage, just 20 files, max.

I resolved this by using barrel files to call the initilizations of the other scripts so ChatGPT could still see the relevant filenames and paths required for good code management.

Either way I hope you find a fix for your problem soon.

P.S I have uploaded .png, .jpg, .ts, .html, .css and .txt without any issues. Not sure if your filetype is the same. I will say however I am using a VPN to bypass a work internet tunneling service which severely limits my internet usage unless I use a VPN, Not sure if that would change anything though tbh for you.

P.P.S Oh I am also a “Plus Member” using GPT-4o

@frsgalaxy thanks for your reply and the max file upload hack much appreciated :grinning:

I tried screenshotting the error message and asking GPT about this, and I got the following response…

I am moderately confident (around 75%) that this issue may be due to a platform-related or account-specific setting that is not addressed by the steps you have already taken. In particular, it is possible that there is:

1 A Platform Glitch Sometimes, temporary server or platform errors occur even if they are not overtly announced. These may persist intermittently and cause certain features (like file uploads to projects) to fail.

2 Browser Extension Conflicts Even if the browser cache is cleared, certain extensions can still interfere with file uploads. Testing in an incognito window or disabling all extensions (especially security or script-blocking extensions) might help isolate the problem.

3.Account Configuration Issues On rare occasions, specific account or subscription settings can interfere with project uploads. Ensuring that your plan is fully active and verifying your payment and account details could help.

4.Temporary File/Permission Conflicts The platform’s file reading and scanning processes may occasionally conflict with certain files, even if they are not corrupted. Double-checking file permissions, file metadata, or uploading from a different directory could make a difference.

If these suggestions do not resolve the matter, contacting OpenAI Support would be advisable, as they can investigate any hidden issues on the server side or within your account.

I can safely rule out GPT’s following suggestions, 2, 3, and 4. This leaves number 1 as being the likely cause.

If anyone else runs into this issue and has a solution please post here, otherwise I recommend contacting OpenAI Support as it appears to be a Platform Glitch rather than user error.

Many thanks to everyone who has posted here, and all the best

I have the same issue. I’m a Plus Member” using GPT-4o on MacOSX Chrome.
