So I was trying to use the api for some 3rd party app but apparently chatgpt subscription is not same with openai account. Can someone tell me if I need to pay another subscription for api or any chance to use my chatgpt subscription for the api? I read some info that if I enter my billing details it will show up but I have subscribed via apple so there is no chance for me to provide the info.
Welcome to the Forum!
ChatGPT and the API are two different products and hence are treated differently from a billing point of view. Your ChatGPT subscription does not provide you with API access. If you’d like to start using the API, then you need to add a minimum of USD 5 in funds to your account on the developer platform: https://platform.openai.com/.
To add funds, navigate to Settings > Organization > Billing. First add a payment method and then you can add credits.

@jr.2509 This makes sense. One issue is that when I go to my OpenAI account and check my balance, it shows that I have $18 of unused balance. Any reason for this? Do I have to add $5 before I get access to that $18? Super confused by that. I haven’t ever added money to my OpenAI account but I do pay for ChatGPT Plus.
Are the USD 18 still valid or have they expired? It sounds like these are the original USD 18 that were granted by OpenAI back in the first half of 2023. If that’s the case, then you can no longer make use of them and have to add your own funds (minimum of USD 5) to get started.
Also note that ChatGPT and the API are two separate products and are treated separately from a billing perspective.
yepp they have expired. But it doesnt show that on the usage screen. I had to go into the billing section for it to show. Thanks!
