A chat session became unresponsive after switching to voice mode and remains stuck despite troubleshooting

Hi everyone,

I’m encountering an unusual issue with ChatGPT and wondering if anyone else has experienced something similar or has a solution.

The Issue

I briefly switched to voice mode during a chat and exited quickly. Since then, that specific conversation is completely unresponsive:

  • The “Stop” button is permanently showing, as if it’s stuck mid-response.
  • I cannot type or submit any new messages.
  • There’s no error message, just a frozen state.
  • This issue is limited to that one chat only — other conversations work fine.

What I’ve tried:

  • Switching browsers (Chrome, Edge, Safari)
  • Using Incognito/Private mode
  • Disabling all extensions
  • Clearing cookies/cache
  • Updating my browser
  • Restarting my device

I’ve contacted OpenAI support, and they’ve escalated it to their technical team. However, I’m past a project deadline and losing access to this chat is seriously affecting my workflow.

Has anyone encountered this before? Is there any workaround or way to recover a stuck chat thread?

I have the same issue. It started during a some connection drops due to a weak wifi connection. Now the chats seem permanently stuck.

I’m having the same problem. It seems okay in other chat lines, but the one I was working in appears permanently stuck in voice mode. It will not even let me press the “stop” button to get out of this mode. So frustrating–I’m using the paid version so was even more surprised to run into this and only have today free to work on this project.
