"You can send up to -2 files. Remove 2 to continue."

Hello, I’m getting this error, despite not having updated any file. Has anybody faced the same?

Hi and welcome to the community!

Just to double check, are you using the Free plan and have you uploaded any files (you write explicitly no upload files) or photos earlier before the error, including unsuccessful attempts?

According to OpenAI’s File Uploads FAQ, Free users are limited to 3 file uploads per day and the limit may be reduced during peak hours:

https://help.openai.com/en/articles/8555545-file-uploads-faq

This may therefore be related to the Free-tier upload limit.

Hello! Thanks for the reply.
I’ve uploaded files in the past, but not in the last few days. I think I’ve been having this error since friday.

Thanks for clarifying!

That does sound weird since it should reset normally every day and it is still persistent for you since Friday.

Have you tried refreshing the page, starting a new chat and signing out and back in? If it continues, please also try an incognito/private window or another browser/device.

If the error remains after those steps, it would be worth contacting Support and including the screenshot. In that case you can email them support@openai.com and open a support case.

I’ve tried to logout and login again, clear storage and even login in incognito mode. Nothing worked.

Okay, that’s unfortunate that nothing worked, at least you’ve tried different approaches.

I think (like I’ve already recommended in the post above), the next step is to contact the support and mention what you’ve already tried, include screenshot/s and that the error has been persistent since Friday (June,12).

Thanks for the help, I’ve indeed got in touch with the support support@openai.com.
The (automated) reply actually seems to have solved. I have just deleted some old files from the library chatgpt[.]com/library.

Good thing it got sorted for you @antonioaltamura and I am bit embarrassed, that I thought about the deleting files as a suggestion, but wrote down everything else except that. Call it Monday brain.

I normally put it down to “Friday afternoon brain”, but tbf even to me it isn’t exclusive to Fridays, so we may need to rebrand it

I am currently facing the issue after deleting all files from chatgpt[.]com/library, signing out/in, regreshing browser, deleting histort/cookies, using the lord’s name in vain and using private window. it happes on other browsers and on my mobile as well.

Haha thank you for being understanding and yeah totally should rebrand it

Welcome to the community @spectacled_owl!

If you already done the necessary steps and nothing helps, in that case I’d recommend you to open a support case.

This just happened to me too, I’m a ChatGPT Plus user

I’ve never hit the file upload limit before, and now suddenly this happens.

I’m experiencing the same issue. I’ve deleted dozens of images and files, but nothing has changed. I can still send prompts by removing the disabled attribute from the HTML button element using Developer Tools in Google Chrome.

This exact problem is just happening to me right now. I’ve already deleted all of the files I had on the library and the problem persists. Now I have zero files on the library and still the “You can send up to -2 files. Remove 2 to continue.” shows up. Any sugestion?

Welcome to community @sofiamlimaf @ridvan and @akmal!

That’s unfortunate to hear that despite deleting the files, the error persist.

This will be a bit repetitive on this thread, but have any of you tried refreshing the page, starting a new conversation and signing out and back in and maybe also try an incognito/private window or another browser/device.

Otherwise if none of these suggestions help, I’d recommend that you all contact the support. I’ve already posted support email address here on this thread.
