I’m just wondering since I saw an update post about the new memory features and I really need the chat history feature, but I don’t know if it’s just rolled out to paid users for testing for now, or if it’s a paid only feature.
According to docs not right now…
Please note that “Saved Memories” and “Chat history” are only available to Plus and Pro accounts. Free tier users only have access to “Saved Memories”.
A bunch of countries also don’t have access yet
New memory features are not yet available to users in EEA, UK, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein.
Additional info.
Free ChatGPT without being logged into a ChatGPT account will most likely never have these options as there is AFAIK no way to enforce goverment laws without knowing where the user resides.
If however you do login and are using free ChatGPT then in the upper right click on your account icon which is typically a circle with an image or letter.
Select “Settings”
Select “Personalization”
That will let you see what is available and options.
HTH
FYI
These images are from a current free ChatGPT account. The image in a latter post which shows “Reference chat history” is most likely from a paid account. Thanks @phyde1001 for the beneficial image.
I don’t have that option yet, is it because I live in Australia? Or is it that it’s just not come out for me yet?
:o that’s interesting I don’t have any reference for Australia, note sorry to confuse if I did but that’s what you will see on a paid account NOT a free account full quote off docs is:
We are slowly rolling out access to our new memory features to all Plus and Pro tier users - please stay tuned! New memory features are not yet available to users in EEA, UK, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein.
So if you have a Plus or Pro account in Australia and don’t have that it may just still be on rollout..
Strange, its prob that I don’t have pro or plus so I may need to wait longer for it to come to me
If this means you are waiting for “Reference chat history” with free ChatGPT and logged in then the way I read from the docs
Free tier users only have access to “Saved Memories”.
means that a free ChatGPT account will never be getting “Reference chat history”. That may change in the future but I suspect it is costly to enable this feature and thus will not be free, I could be wrong.
That makes sense, all though it can change and maybe it might roll out to free users but at this point it’s hard to tell
Also, sometimes OpenAI does rollout strategies where the people who pay get features first for testing and free users usually get them when they are fully tested and released
I really don’t pay much attention to these options so your question does have me reviewing this in more detail and having been using ChatGPT for over two years things change faster than one is willing to dedicate time to keeping up to date. So with that in reading the docs closely consider this:
The docs note:
Reference chat history: ChatGPT can also use information from your past chats to make future conversations more helpful. For example, if you once said you like Thai food, it may take that into account the next time you ask “What should I have for lunch?” ChatGPT doesn’t remember every detail from past chats, so use saved memories for anything you want it to always keep in mind.
This reminds me of a context window but one that is tied to the account and not just the conversation. As such being a context window it can not remember everything, and remembering specific details always might be what you seek. If so then if you have “Reference saved memories” that might be a better option.
Yeah, I have been waiting for a feature like it for ages and I really hope it won’t be behind a paywall
GPTs are also Plus and Pro… For remembering specifics I got this advice: ChatGPT Memory and Chat History Usage Practicalities - #16 by jochenschultz
They haven’t made Custom GPTs free in forever so you might be waiting a while on a free account
Its all good, I don’t mind waiting times, I just really need the feature since its extremely useful to me
there is mcp now.. so adding a graph and a context builder should not be from scratch…
