Once the following criteria are met, you’ll automatically move to the next tier:
At least $1,000 spent on the API since account creation.
At least 30 days have passed since the first successful payment.

According to the above text that was in my dashboard and the document was provided

I am now tier 4

If I top up my account with $1,000, will I be upgraded to the next level or should I use the entire $1,000?

Usage of credits is not a factor.

OpenAI might even be pleased by customers that buy credits that expire in a year and never use them.

If you are at tier 4, that indicates your past payments meet: “$250 paid and 14+ days since first successful payment”

So you would not have to prepurchase an entire qualifying amount of $1000, just that additional amount on top of all past payments which would bring you into the next qualifying level. Maximum of $750, probably less.

There is no “pay this much more” screen, though, you have to calculate. Then calculate if your rate of usage on whatever future models are available could actually consume a balance before credits go poof Sept 2025.

“o1” models will not stay exclusively tier-5, per OpenAI.
