What I should know in terms of fees when upgrading to tier 1?

Hi,
The free tier has expired since 5$ has been spent on the API since my account creation. I want to upgrade to tier 1 after adding my payment details
but before I have two questions. Note that the model that I’m using is gpt-3.5-turbo.

  1. Tier 1 rate limits for gpt-3.5-turbo are 3,500 RPM, 10,000 RPD, and 60,000 TPM. What If I exceeded this limit would I be automatically moved to tier 2 or by managing usage limits I could prevent being moved to the upper tiers?

  2. In my scenario, Could someone explain to me how I calculate my maximum monthly spending considering that I want to stay on tier 1, please?

Thank you!

Hi!
Luckily, it’s simpler than you think:
The API tiers are not a subscription. You pay when you need to. When you pay more you get upgraded.

Long form:

When on a pre-paid plan you can consume the API as long as you have credits. When your credits are used up you won’t get any return from the API anymore.

When you hit the rate limits you will get an error message from the API, essentially telling you to wait before you can continue.

When you spend money on API credits you will eventually be upgraded to the next tier. What you do with that is your own choice.

So this is just a one time purchase? It wouldn’t charge me again unless I pay for it manually?

The API is not a subscription. You buy credits, and then you spend them by using services.

There is an optional auto-recharge feature that can keep your account refilled before the balance hits $0 - and it will be obvious on the settings->billing page of your platform.openai.com account.
