I’m experiencing a serious issue trying to update the VAT number on my ChatGPT account after my company changed. Based on the information I received from the support chat, I understand the following:
- The VAT field only appears when starting a completely new subscription.
- Once the first purchase is made, you can’t edit the VAT number from your billing settings.
- Even after cancelling my subscription and waiting, the system reuses the previous billing profile, so the old VAT still shows up.
- I was told that the only way to set a new VAT is by creating a new OpenAI account, which I want to avoid because I don’t want to lose all my chat history and personalizations.
This is a big issue for me. I need the updated VAT number to appear on future invoices due to legal and accounting requirements — but the current system offers no clear way to update it without essentially throwing away my account.
I already cancelled my plan and am waiting for the billing period to end to attempt a fresh subscription. But I’m concerned that even then, the old VAT profile will stick and I’ll have no way to reset it.
Can OpenAI support manually reset or clear the billing profile tied to my account so I can enter a new VAT when I re-subscribe?
If not, is this limitation at least being worked on?
Also, to be honest, it’s really annoying and limiting to deal only with an AI chat when trying to resolve important billing/legal matters. In situations like this, users need a way to speak with a human or get email-based help — especially when dealing with tax documents.
