After the update, my ChatGPT is experiencing a new issue: Project functionality in the Sidebar is failing. Clicking Retry didn’t help. Removing Chrome extensions and restarting multiple times didn’t help either.
Hi vincertp,
I am experiencing the exact same issue after the recent update. On the web, the Projects sidebar just says “Unable to load projects” and the Retry button does not help.
Here is what I have already tried without success:
-
Flushed DNS cache in Chrome
-
Cleared all site data for chatgpt and unregistered the Service Worker via DevTools
-
Hard reload with cache cleared
-
Tested in Incognito and with a fresh Chrome profile
-
Tested on Edge and Firefox
-
Switched networks Wi-Fi and mobile hotspot
-
Fully updated Windows, browsers, and antivirus Windows Defender also tested with it completely disabled
Interestingly, in the iOS app I can log in and see all my Projects normally. But in iOS browsers Safari and Chrome I face the same problem as on desktop. My wife’s account works fine on the same devices and networks, so this looks very account specific.
In DevTools I can see that the only “projects” call being made is:
GET /ces/v1/projects/oai/settings → 200 OK
There is no request to actually fetch the project list for example /projects or /workspaces/…/projects. This makes me think it is not a client issue but rather a feature flag or account configuration problem on the server side.
I have already contacted OpenAI Support and shared these details with them. Maybe gives Support a clearer lead. I will let you know once I have something to share.
EDIT: According to the information I had previously shared with them, they asked me to provide a sanitized HAR file so they could further confirm that the issue is not on my side. Until now, it seemed they were not fully aware of this issue. I have now sent the sanitized HAR file to OpenAI support and am awaiting their feedback, which so far has been prompt.
Thank you very much! I hope it will be fixed soon. In today’s tutorial I can only show the malfunctioning state of Plus. But the Project displays normally in the free plan.
Quick update: Support acknowledged the case and escalated it to their Support Engineering team. I have the feeling that they were not aware of this issue…
Still facing the same issue. Anything particular we are supposed to individually do? since i think it can be a user specific problem.
What I already tried locally
- Flushed DNS in Chrome (
chrome://net-internals/#dns) - Cleared all site data for chatgpt and unregistered the Service Worker in DevTools
- Empty cache and hard reload in Chrome DevTools
- Tested Incognito without extensions
- Also tested Edge and Firefox
- Switched networks (home Wi-Fi and mobile hotspot)
- Windows fully updated, all browsers up to date
- Antivirus is Windows Defender, temporarily disabled for testing
What Support advised me to do (client side)
- Flush DNS
- Update Chrome and ensure Windows is fully updated
- Reproduce and retest after the above
(later they asked for a sanitized HAR only to verify it is not client side)
Why this likely is not an end-user problem
- iOS app shows all Projects correctly, while iOS browsers fail the same way as desktop
- Reports in this thread indicate Free accounts can access Projects while some Plus accounts cannot
- My wife’s Free account works on the same devices and networks
- Across multiple browsers, cleared site data and different networks there is no change
- In DevTools the only “projects” call is
GET /ces/v1/projects/oai/settingsreturning 200, and there is no request that actually fetches a project list - Repeated 404s hit a gizmos sidebar route, which looks feature-flagged
Practical takeaway
- For self-checks: clear site data and Service Worker, do an empty cache and hard reload, another browser and network, and watch DevTools Network. If you do not see any project-list request at all, it likely points to an account or feature-flag configuration on the server side rather than a local setup issue.
No update from the Support Engineering team yet. I’m still waiting, and Projects still don’t load.
Quick update from Support: they just pushed a fix intended to resolve the Projects issue and asked how things look now. On my side, after clearing cache and retesting, Projects still do not load on the web (Windows Chrome). The iOS app shows Projects, but Safari and Chrome on iPhone still fail.
Can others please check if the fix works for you now?
EDIT: Seems to be working again for me!
EDIT2: …and they do not load. Hope you can share rather postive feedback!
EDIT3: It seems to be working again for me. However, I’m in contact with Support since this issue is intermittent, and they confirmed that they cannot reproduce it.
Hello, I am having a similar issue. Thankfully, I am able to see most of my projects; the issue is midway my projects just disappear. The larger issue is they disappear across my entire account. So on my phone, and ChatGPT Windows app, ChatGPT web on both my PCs all instantly show the missing project.
I’m pretty confident that is not a client-side issue. It seems like there is some sort of database or data issue.
I have tried all the basic troubleshooting steps, however none of them seem to work. If anyone has any suggestions please lmk.
This doesn’t sound like a client-side issue to me either. Just to clarify: you’re experiencing this problem on two different PCs, and the projects also disappear on your phone app? In my case the issue eventually got fixed (knocking on wood), but based on what you describe, I’d really recommend opening a support ticket.
I can’t imagine that two independent devices would both have a corrupted cache causing this. To contact support via the web app:
- Click on your name (bottom left).
- Select Help.
- A new browser tab opens with the support chatbot.
- If you ask the bot to escalate your case, it will forward it to a human agent.
From my experience, you usually get a response within ~2 days. When I opened my ticket, support actually said: “Oh, that’s new.” They asked me to provide several files to make sure it wasn’t just my setup, but it confirmed the issue was on their side. I’m not sure they’re fully aware how widespread the project problems are yet.
Did not read any posts on Reddit or X regarding this issue… this thread was the first of its kind.
