Pro user hitting 10-file limit in ChatGPT Projects — uploads freeze & edits fail despite 20-file allowance ⚠️ Anyone else experiencing this?

Hi everyone,

I’m a ChatGPT Pro subscriber facing a frustrating issue with the Projects feature:

  • Officially, Pro users can upload up to 20 files per project, but the UI enforces a 10-file limit.
  • When the project exceeds 10 files:
    • Editing instructions throws this error:

“Cannot upload more than 10 files” :warning:

  • Uploading the 11th file and beyond causes uploads to freeze indefinitely.
  • I cannot delete or replace files once the limit is exceeded, locking the project.

I’ve escalated this to OpenAI Support with screenshots and details, but I’m curious if others here have experienced this too?

Sharing here to see if it’s widespread or if anyone has workarounds.

Thanks in advance!

Hi all,
Just wanted to add an important detail I didn’t include in the main post:

When trying to edit the project instructions on projects with more than 10 files, I get this red error message:

“Cannot upload more than 10 files” :warning:

This happens even though I’m not uploading any new files—just editing text. It’s part of the same bug causing uploads to freeze beyond 10 files, and it effectively locks the project from being edited or updated.

Hope this helps clarify the issue!

Hi Frederick,

Thanks for bringing this up.

Something very similar happens to me: whenever I try to upload more than 10 files to a project, the upload just freezes—nothing moves forward.

Even if I wait several minutes, the UI doesn’t recover. It doesn’t show an explicit error at first, but the files never finish uploading. Despite the official 20-file limit for Pro users. Glad to know I’m not the only one seeing this.

Following the thread in case anyone finds a workaround or fix

Im also experiencing the same issue when trying to edit project description for a project that has more than 10 files uploaded to it.

Yeah, asked gpt to check Reddit and found a bunch of posts since the last few days.

So it’s either a bug or anew restriction they haven’t documented yet.

Or it’s prep for got 5o or reaction to surge in traffic. Either way the more people report or comment that they also have this issue the faster it will become visible. Because it’s a power user only problem. Ie not everyone uses more then 10files.

Having this too, I have a project with 17 files, I can’t delete a file without getting this error. I’ve seen a few people told by support that they should refresh, or clear cache, but if it is indeed a bug, it’s definitely from ChatGPT’s side.

You can see the 400 Bad Request response from the server in the browser’s dev tools. Seems to be a failing server-side validation check or something similar.

Viel Erfolg!
