I understand that ChatGPT needs usage limits on the Free plan, and I understand that newer features may require additional computing resources. My concern is not that limits exist. My concern is how those limits are being imposed on users.
Over time, ChatGPT has gained many new features and capabilities. That is great for users who actually need them. However, users who primarily use ChatGPT for ordinary, long-form conversations may not need or use many of these additional features at all.
Yet those users can still experience stricter usage limits.
This creates a frustrating situation: I am effectively being given features I did not ask for, while the basic feature I actually use, conversation, becomes more restricted.
I would strongly prefer a system where Free users can make an explicit trade-off between features and usage limits.
For example:
- Users who only want basic conversation could choose a “Chat-focused” mode with a higher conversation limit.
- Users who want additional tools or advanced features could enable them and accept a lower usage limit in exchange.
- Before enabling a feature, ChatGPT could clearly explain how it would affect the user’s usage allowance.
- Users should be able to disable features they do not use and recover the corresponding allocation toward basic chat.
This would make the Free plan feel much more transparent and user-controlled.
I am not asking OpenAI to remove all limits. I am asking for the ability to decide what I am willing to trade away in order to use the service I actually want.
For users who primarily use ChatGPT as a conversational assistant, long conversations are not a secondary feature. They are the core experience.
Please consider giving Free users more control over this trade-off instead of applying increasingly restrictive limits to everyone regardless of which features they actually use.
I genuinely like using ChatGPT, which is precisely why this change is frustrating. I would much rather have a simpler version that lets me have longer conversations than a feature-rich version that frequently tells me I have to wait several hours.
