Hello OpenAI Team,
I would like to respectfully provide detailed feedback regarding an experience I recently had with ChatGPT on the Free plan.
First, I want to clarify that I completely understand the need for usage limits on certain features. I understand that image processing, file uploads, and other advanced tools require resources, and I am not questioning the existence of these limits.
My feedback is specifically about how these limits affect existing conversations.
1. Description of the issue
Recently, I was using an existing ChatGPT conversation for a long-term project. This conversation already contained important context, previous discussions, technical information, decisions, and project history.
Earlier in that conversation, I uploaded an image and a file. Later, after reaching the image/file usage limit, ChatGPT displayed this message:
“Chat paused until usage resets at 4:20 PM
You’ve reached the limit for chats that include files or images. Start a new text-only chat or upgrade to continue now.”
The confusing part was that I was not trying to upload another image or file.
I was only trying to send a normal text message.
However, the Send button became disabled, and the interface showed:
“Message limit reached”
As a result, I was unable to continue sending text messages in that conversation until the reset time.
2. Why this creates confusion
My understanding is that text messages and image/file tools have separate limits.
If those capabilities have separate limits, it is confusing that reaching an image/file limit can prevent normal text communication inside the same conversation.
From a user’s perspective, it feels like the entire conversation has been restricted even though the user has not reached a text messaging limit.
The wording can also be confusing because the interface says:
“Message limit reached”
while the actual limitation appears to be related to images/files.
3. Impact on long-term conversations
The main reason this matters is conversation continuity.
For many users, a conversation is not just a temporary chat. It can become a workspace containing:
- Previous explanations
- Technical details
- Decisions
- Research history
- Troubleshooting steps
- Project context
In my case, the reason I wanted to continue in the same conversation was because all of that information was already there.
Starting a new text-only conversation technically works, but it is not a complete solution.
It requires the user to:
- Copy information manually
- Rewrite previous context
- Summarize long discussions
- Risk losing important details
This is especially inconvenient for users working on:
- Long-term projects
- Programming or modding projects
- Research
- Education
- Technical troubleshooting
4. Questions about the current design
I would appreciate clarification on the following points:
- Is this behavior an intentional product design decision, or is it an implementation limitation?
- If text messaging and image/file tools have separate limits, why is the entire conversation paused instead of only disabling the affected feature?
- Is there a technical reason why text messages cannot continue after the image/file limit has been reached?
- Could the system allow a conversation to continue in text-only mode until the tool limit resets?
- If maintaining the same conversation context is technically possible, could users keep using text while waiting for image/file access to return?
- Could the interface clearly distinguish between:
- Text message limits
- Image/file tool limits
so users understand exactly what capability is unavailable?
- Is this behavior something that could be reconsidered from a user-experience perspective in future updates?
5. Suggested improvement
I am not requesting unlimited access to image uploads, file uploads, or any restricted tools.
I completely understand that those features need limits.
My suggestion is only to separate the availability of each capability.
For example:
- If the text limit is available, text messaging should remain available.
- If the image limit is reached, only image uploads should be disabled.
- If the file limit is reached, only file uploads should be disabled.
- Other tools should follow their own limits.
- The conversation itself should remain accessible unless there is a specific technical reason preventing continuation.
A message such as this would be much clearer:
“You have reached your image/file usage limit. Image and file uploads are temporarily unavailable until 4:20 PM, but you can continue chatting with text.”
This would better match the idea of separate feature limits.
6. Request for review
I would appreciate it if this feedback could be reviewed by the appropriate product, UX, or engineering team.
I understand that support may not be able to immediately change product behavior, and I am not expecting a personal exception for my account.
My goal is simply to help improve the experience for users who rely on ChatGPT for longer conversations.
I would especially appreciate clarification on one broader question:
Is this behavior expected to remain this way, or is OpenAI considering separating text messaging access from image/file tool limits in the future?
I believe this distinction could significantly improve clarity and usability, especially for Free users who rely on long-running conversations.
Again, I want to emphasize that I am not asking OpenAI to remove limits on resource-intensive features.
My request is only that when different capabilities have separate limits, those limitations should ideally remain separate from each other.
Thank you for taking the time to read this feedback and consider the suggestion.
Best regards,
A ChatGPT Free user
