OpenAI, Why Are You Charging Me Extra Every Month for Seats I Don’t Use? (and can't remove)

I’ve been a loyal OpenAI supporter for over two years, but this recent experience has left me feeling scammed.

Here’s the situation:

  1. I Paid My September Team Invoice of $72. Now, I’m seeing a $144 charge that includes a $90 for “remaining time” that I already paid for. This doesn’t make sense!

I Can’t Reduce My Seats from 3 to 2. Despite needing only two seats, there’s a cross icon on the minus button, making it impossible to adjust the seat count down. I’ve reached out to support multiple times about this, but nothing was done. As a result, I’m forced to pay for three seats – an extra $30 every month – for something I don’t even use. This has been going on for 6+ months, meaning I’ve overpaid by more than $180.

Support Told Me My Workspace Account Doesn’t Exist. My last support ticket response claimed my email wasn’t associated with a workspace account – despite being charged monthly for it! There are no pending invites either.

I need a refund for all the money spent for services that I didn’t choose to pay for.

Has anyone else experienced this? Any advice or similar experiences would be greatly appreciated! I really want to continue supporting ChatGPT over other AI models, but this feels like a blatant cash grab that OpenAI needs to address.

Hey everyone,

I’m posting here because I’m at my wit’s end with OpenAI’s billing system and support team, and I’m hoping someone here might have advice or has faced something similar.

I’m on the ChatGPT Team flexible plan, which is supposed to be $30 per person/month, with a minimum charge of $60 for two seats. However, my account is locked at 3 seats for some reason, so I’m getting billed $90/month instead of $60. The worst part? Every time I try to adjust the seat count down to 2, it just resets to 3.

There’s a cross icon over the seat adjustment, and nothing I try seems to work. I’ve cleared my cache, tried different browsers, and even used incognito mode—no luck. It’s been over a month of overcharging, and I’m effectively being scammed out of an extra $30 every month.

I reached out to support, but they’re completely unresponsive. The last time I had an issue, it took over a month to even get a reply. I’ve tried following up multiple times, marking messages as urgent, but it feels like I’m just being ignored. For a company as big as OpenAI, this kind of customer service is unacceptable.

If anyone has dealt with this before or has any ideas on how to get them to respond faster, I’d really appreciate the help. I’m considering taking this to my bank to dispute the charges if they don’t resolve this soon.

Hi!
I’m sorry to hear you’re experiencing these issues. Unfortunately, there’s nothing we can do in the developer community forum to assist with account or billing problems. I can only provide a link to help.openai.com, and you might also want to contact the Accounts Receivable team directly at ar@openai.com.

If I were in your position, I’d consider exporting my data and canceling my subscription to avoid any additional charges, and then re-subscribing.

I hope this helps, and that your issue is resolved as soon as possible!
