iOS ChatGPT Accessibility Issue: Can't Activate Send Button To Send a Message

Device: iPhone SE
iOS version: 17.6.1
ChatGPT app version: 1.2024.233 (10530873201)

As of the latest version of the ChatGPT iOS app, I can no longer activate the button to send a message (or initiate voice mode when no text entered) using the built-in iOS screen reader VoiceOver. The usual gesture to activate an item, double single finger tap, does nothing when the button has focus. As you can imagine, this effectively renders the app useless to me. I rely on the ChatGPT app for daily tasks, including using its vision capabilities to find the right color of clothing in the morning, read aloud mail and menus, describe images and much more. I know it can take weeks or months for bugs to be addressed, and as a developer myself, I understand why, but I hope this issue can be expedited as much as possible given its critical nature.
So far, I’ve tried closing and restarting the app, restarting my phone, and uninstalling and reinstalling the app, but the issue persists. If anyone can think of any further troubleshooting steps I can try as we await a fix, I’m open to suggestions.

Thanks, and let me know if you need further details.

Me too, and before that, it froze after a few messages, and I know Voiceover was causing it.

This is ridiculous because they talk about how they use AI to help all of humanity, and they couldn’t care less about accessibility. I emailed their support team, who says they do care about accessibility, but if that were true, accessibility wouldn’t keep getting broken.

As you probably know, accessibility has been broken in the past. Even if they fix this issue in a timely manner, they will probably break accessibility again in a few weeks.

Sending this post to the Support team.

Hi there and thanks for the supportive reply! I appreciate that you’ve also reached out to the support team. I did the same, as well. I totally feel your frustration. I’d like to say, though, that ChatGPT has mostly been a reasonably accessible experience, and in the past when I’ve raised issues like this, the team has ultimately done the right thing and got it taken care of, so while it may not be on the timeframe either of us would hope for, I’m still confident they will Get this fixed for us. Fingers crossed. Thanks again

I can’t use it from the website now either because it freezes, and the messages won’t load. So basically we won’t be able to use ChatGPT for several weeks until it gets fixed.

Maybe they will do the right thing, but if they truly cared about accessibility, it would never be broken and maintained from update to update, just like it is for other apps that really do care about accessibility.

In addition to being unable to activate the Send button, I also have the same problem being unable to activate the headphone button on the iOS app with VoiceOver on. When I try to activate the Headphone button with VoiceOver on, by the usual one finger double tap gesture, nothing happens.

As of the latest app update three days ago, the issues seem to be resolved! The send button and the button to activate voice mode now work reliably. However, before we mark this issue as solved, I’d like to give everyone in this thread a chance to check for themselves, just to make sure it’s working for them, too.
