GPT Builder domain verification fails: unsupported content type application/octet-stream

I am trying to verify my GPT Builder Profile domain.

The OpenAI TXT record is publicly visible via DNS lookup:
(my domain name) IN TXT “openai-domain-verification=…”

However, when I click “Check” in GPT Builder domain verification, I receive this error:

“Your domain could not be verified: Unsupported content type: application/octet-stream. This API method only accepts application/json requests, but you specified the header Content-Type: application/octet-stream.”

This happens on desktop and mobile in Chrome and Safari and in an incognito separate window - no add blockers etc.

This appears to me to be a GPT Builder domain verification API/content-type error, not a DNS propagation issue…Anyone else experienced this (have asked support but keep getting their bot who suggests I should delete my account…or read a doc about billing issues…so thought I would try here…hope that’s OK [have asked the bot to escalate to a real support person - it said a reply would be available ‘in a few days’…guess it doesn’t like me…lol)…
Thanks…John

Welcome to the forum!

No, the bots just had a group meeting and decided it was your turn. :slightly_smiling_face:

Note: I am not an OpenAI employee, just someone who can offer a few suggestions.

Please read the entire reply first. It may initially sound like I am sending you back down a path that already failed, but I am including these details for others who may find your topic later and want to understand what you already tried.

Below this topic there should be a Related Topics section. I noticed one topic describing a similar GPT problem, but after reading it, I did not see a confirmed solution or a reply from OpenAI Support. It does, however, suggest contacting OpenAI Support.

The official support path is through the Help Center at help.openai.com, using the chat bubble which you seem to have used.

How can I contact support?

That route often seems most useful for account, login, and billing issues, but is not your problem, and is not working for you

For UI-related problems, OpenAI Support may ask for a HAR file. I have not personally used HAR files with OpenAI Support, so I cannot say whether it is appropriate for your specific case, but OpenAI does document the process.

Recording a HAR file for Troubleshooting UI Issues

Be careful with HAR files because they can contain personal or sensitive information. OpenAI’s article also notes that the ChatGPT desktop app does not currently provide developer tools for HAR capture, so this is mainly a browser-based troubleshooting option.

In one topic where OpenAI Support asked for a HAR file, they also asked that it be submitted through an OpenAI support ticket. To get a support ticket number, send an email to support@openai.com and be sure to follow OpenAI’s best practices for submitting a support request.

If you contact Support, include the information OpenAI asks for: a clear description of the issue, steps to reproduce it, timestamps with timezone, browser and OS details, screenshots or screen recordings if useful, and any relevant GPT link or identifier.

Best Practices for Submitting a Support Request

That is the best information I can offer. I have not personally had this exact problem, so I can only point to what OpenAI documents and what I have seen others use when trying to get these issues resolved. Also, a “resolution” may simply mean Support identifies the cause, not necessarily that the issue can be immediately fixed on the user side.

Welcome to the forum, @JohnMills

Unfortunately, new domain verifications are currently disabled for non-Enterprise accounts due to technical issues. Our team is actively working on a solution.

Please check back after some time. If you’re still unable to verify your domain after that, please reach out to OpenAI Support so the team can review it further.

Thank You ~Smith…that is so helpful…

…I was really going round…and..round..and round…getting nowhere very fast…not helped (just so you know) when your AI bot keeps interjecting requesting screenshots and for me to read certain guides/articles…

…I must have provided these at least 6 times over the past 24 hours…so such a relief to know it is your end..

…whenever you get a moment it would be nice to know what you actually mean when you say “after some time”…maybe thats 24 hours…maybe 48hrs…maybe a week? (you could even drop me an email to say its fixed…if you could that would be great)

Thanks again for a direct and meaningful reply…Best…John

Thank you for the kind words. I'm glad the previous reply helped clarify what was happening.

The current expectation is that this should be resolved around mid-July, though I can't guarantee an exact timeline.

In the meantime, could you please create a support ticket and share the case ID here? I can use that to locate your request, grab your email address from the ticket, and make sure you're on the notification list so our team can let you know once domain verification is available again.

Thanks again ~Smith…really appreciate your help…

…obviously it would be nice if resolution could be sooner for this but I fully appreciate there is a lot going on in the world of AI right now…the case numbers I have are:

Case Number: 11039898

Case Number: 11038144

Case Number: 11023199

Case Number: 11021400

Hope that helps…take care…Best…John

Thank you for sharing the support ticket number.

You’ll receive a notification from our team once domain verification is available again.
