Google Workspace Admin-Managed Drive Connector: Sync Completes, But No Documents Are Searchable

I’m having trouble with the admin-managed Google Drive connector in ChatGPT Team. After following all official setup steps https://help.openai.com/en/articles/10929079-google-workspace-admin-managed-setup, I still cannot retrieve any documents—even though sync completes successfully.

Our setup:

  • Drive type: Shared Drive (created specifically for ChatGPT integration, named “Documents for AI context - ChatGPT”)
  • File types: Only a handful of Google Docs and Google Slides (no more than 5 test files at the moment)
  • Connector setup:
    • Chose “exclude by default”
    • Entered the Shared Drive ID (copied from the URL as per the OpenAI guide)
  • Users: The shared drive includes multiple users, including the service account and admin account (who set up the connector). All relevant accounts have been given appropriate permissions (“Content Manager” or higher).
  • Time since sync: Over a week (multiple retrieval attempts in this period)
  • Search result: Every search in ChatGPT returns, “no relevant document found.” No explicit errors.

What I’ve tried / checked:

  • Service account and admin have access to the shared drive (added directly in Drive sharing).
  • All users who should have access to the drive and its contents have appropriate permissions.
  • Service account configured with domain-wide delegation.
  • All required OAuth scopes added, exactly as listed in the OpenAI admin guide.
  • Verified the shared drive ID is correct.
  • The admin account is given the following roles:
    User API Read and Group API Read (These are custom roles).
    Storage Admin
  • Double-checked inclusion/exclusion options in the connector config for troubleshooting.
  • Waited days after sync completes—no difference.
  • Google Workspace audit logs: Found no API activity or errors related to the service account or admin, even after attempting searches in ChatGPT.

I’m trying to troubleshoot this issue for days now. The sync shows completed, but I can’t retrieve any relevant document.

I just have the official article and chatGPT as reference. There are not much resources on this online.

Can anyone please guide me what should I do next to debug this issue?
Any insights or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Having the same issue. Also tried all those troubleshooting steps. I’m still unable to sync any shared drives.
