File Upload ("+") Button Disabled in ChatGPT on Debian 12 / Chrome

I am experiencing an issue with the file upload function in ChatGPT. The “+” button is disabled in my Chrome browser on Debian 12 (Bookworm).

:mag: What I have tested so far:

Incognito mode: File upload works.

New Chrome profile: The upload button works initially but turns gray and becomes unusable after all previous chats are loaded.

Different browser (Firefox, Chromium): Same issue.

Different computer with the same OpenAI account: File upload works fine.

Reset Chrome flags & reinstalled Chrome: No improvement.

Seeing the same thing here in Chrome v133.0.6943.127 on MacOS 15.3.1

i’m having the issue too. it started last night.

Great news… attaching just started working for me again via my browser!!

but some work arounds if you’re still having the issue is to create a project and attached the file in the project files then reference it in the chat. can still attach on mobile app in the chat. but neither is ideal.

The same is true here, although it is enabled in some previous chats and allows me to upload files to projects.

Ah yes, I’m on Edge.

I am having the same issue. Will try to upload a file via project but all upload ability seems to have been taken away. Why are there no updates given out to users?

This began 24 hours ago and still grey. I can go to older chats but then I have “contamination” of the topic of the chat. I also noted that the way it processed my answers was completely off. Now it takes 5 times longer and shows “the thinking” behind the answer. The answers are not as favourable as well. Located in Australia here, not sure if there are different “personalities” based on the location of user but I prefer the chatGPT from a few days ago!

Same for me, also in Australia. ChatGPT itself can’t answer the question. Said to check policy updates etc. This is the first thread I found on it, seems current. Any ‘official’ explanation?

same issue; the + uploader comes back if I log out or go back to an older session which is very strange, seems like a bug to me

Logging off and logging back in seems to solve the problem.
But conversations that began with the “+” sign disabled, remain disabled.

You’re likely using mini. Switch back to 4o

Image uploads are only supported on GPT-4o. If your model is set to ChatGPT (default model) or GPT-4o mini, the upload option will not be available. Please follow these steps:

  • Click on the model selector at the top of your ChatGPT interface.
  • Select GPT-4o, which enables image uploads.
  • If you’re already on GPT-4o, try switching to a different model (e.g., GPT-4o mini), then switch back to GPT-4o—this refreshes the settings and may restore missing features.
