Feature Request: Bulk Delete Option for Chat History

Dear OpenAI Team,

I hope this message finds you well. I am writing to request a feature enhancement for the ChatGPT platform, specifically regarding the management of chat history.

Feature Request: Bulk Delete Option

As a frequent user of ChatGPT, I often find myself with numerous old threads in my history pane. Deleting each thread individually is time-consuming and inefficient. To improve user experience, I would like to request the implementation of a “Bulk Delete” or “Batch Delete” feature. This feature would allow users to select multiple threads simultaneously and delete them in one action.

Key Benefits:

  1. Time Efficiency: Save users time by allowing them to delete multiple threads at once.
  2. Improved User Experience: Enhance the usability of the history pane by making it easier to manage and organize chat history.
  3. Better Performance: Potentially improve platform performance by enabling users to clean up their history more effectively.

Suggested Implementation:

  • Multi-Select Option: Add checkboxes next to each thread in the history pane to allow for multi-selection.
  • Select All: Include a “Select All” option for users who want to delete all threads.
  • Bulk Delete Button: Provide a single “Delete Selected” button that deletes all selected threads with one click.

Thank you for considering this feature request. I believe it will significantly enhance the user experience for many ChatGPT users. I appreciate your attention to this suggestion and look forward to any updates you may provide.

Best regards,

Wini G

I’d like to upvote this. It’s a bit of a pain to clear out old memory.

I like the multi-select option … but ‘delete before 1-Mar-2024’ (for example) would be great too.

@wini Same here. I really wished there was a bulk delete option. I just emailed about the issue at support@openai.com before I found this forum. Hopefully someone is paying attention.

Seconded. It is quite tedious to delete all the old chats. Being able to select several and delete them all at once (like you would in an email inbox) would be a great feature.

Yes! Came to this forum out of frustration about this exact issue. Bulk selection to handle chats for deletion, sorting into project folders and archiving needs to be addressed ASAP.

Just wanted to +1 this and note that I’ve been using Chrome extensions to solve this problem. Until last month, it worked; this month, it’s being rate-limited. Since we can no longer solve this externally, we need this to be an OpenAI product feature.

Currently, I can archive or delete everything in bulk, or delete things 1 by 1. Definitely need a middle ground.

Hey ash1ey, I know that's inconvenient.

This feature request comes up regularly, and we're aware of how valuable it would be and how much it could simplify managing chats.

It's also the kind of feature that sounds simple but comes with some tricky edge cases, such as accidental mass deletion, syncing across devices, archived chats, projects, retention rules, undo/recovery expectations, and enterprise policies. None of that makes it impossible, but it does make a seemingly straightforward feature more complex to implement.

That said, I'll pass this feedback along to the product team so they can review it and decide whether it's something they'd like to implement.
