Hello OpenAI Team,
I would like to suggest a feature that could make ChatGPT much more reliable for people who use it for important work.
Conversations often contain valuable research, code, writing, and ideas. However, editing a message can make it difficult to return to an earlier version, and accidentally deleting a conversation can result in permanent loss of access.
I propose a Chat History Recovery System with three key features:
1. Full Message Version History
Allow users to view and restore previous versions of their prompts and ChatGPT responses, even after multiple edits.
2. Recently Deleted Chats
Introduce a temporary recovery folder where deleted conversations remain available for a limited period, such as 30 days, before permanent deletion.
3. Conversation Checkpoints
Let users save important versions of a conversation before making major edits, so they can return to a previous state whenever needed.
Privacy should remain a priority, with clear deletion controls and secure handling of saved versions.
This would be particularly valuable for developers, students, writers, researchers, and professionals who rely on ChatGPT for ongoing work.
ChatGPT is not just a place to ask questions anymore; many people use it to create and maintain valuable work. Giving users better control over their conversation history would help prevent accidental loss and make the experience more dependable.
Thank you for considering this suggestion.
