Feature Request: Recycle Bin for Deleted ChatGPT Conversations

Summary

I would like to propose a Recycle Bin feature for ChatGPT that allows users to recover accidentally deleted conversations for a limited time before they are permanently removed.

The Problem

Many users use ChatGPT for important tasks such as:

  • Studying and exam preparation

  • Software development

  • Research

  • Writing documents

  • Long-term projects

  • Personal notes

Currently, if a conversation is accidentally deleted, it cannot be recovered. A single mistaken click can permanently erase hours or even months of valuable work.

Proposed Solution

Instead of permanently deleting a conversation immediately, move it to a Recycle Bin.

The deleted conversation should remain there for 30 days before being permanently removed.

Users should be able to:

  • Restore deleted conversations.

  • Permanently delete conversations immediately.

  • Empty the entire Recycle Bin.

  • View the remaining days before automatic deletion.

Additional Features

1. Undo Delete

After deleting a conversation, show a notification such as:

“Conversation moved to Recycle Bin. Undo?”

This notification could remain visible for 10–30 seconds.

2. Permanent Delete Option

For users who want immediate deletion for privacy reasons:

  • Move to Recycle Bin

  • Delete Permanently

This gives users complete control over their data.

3. Recycle Bin Page

The Recycle Bin could display:

  • Conversation title

  • Date deleted

  • Days remaining before permanent deletion

Each conversation would have:

  • Restore

  • Delete Permanently

4. Bulk Actions

Allow users to:

  • Restore all conversations

  • Permanently delete selected conversations

  • Empty the Recycle Bin

Privacy

This feature should respect user privacy by providing two deletion options:

  • Move to Recycle Bin (recoverable for a limited time)

  • Delete Permanently (immediate and irreversible)

Users who require instant deletion can continue to have that option.

Benefits

  • Prevents accidental loss of valuable conversations.

  • Increases user confidence when managing chats.

  • Reduces frustration caused by irreversible mistakes.

  • Aligns with user expectations from services such as Gmail, Google Drive, and operating systems that provide a temporary recovery mechanism.

Optional Future Enhancements

  • User-selectable retention period (7, 30, or 90 days).

  • Search within the Recycle Bin.

  • Filter by deletion date.

  • Automatic reminder before permanent deletion.

  • Ability to recover only specific messages if that ever becomes technically feasible.

Why This Matters

Many users rely on ChatGPT daily for learning, coding, business, and creative work. Accidentally deleting a conversation can mean losing significant effort.

A Recycle Bin would improve the overall user experience by adding a safety net while still allowing users who prefer immediate deletion to choose that option.
