I would like to propose an enhancement that could significantly improve user experience while maintaining a balance between operational efficiency and technical feasibility.

Current Challenge

At present, opening a new tab or conversation in ChatGPT results in a complete loss of prior context, requiring users to reintroduce crucial information each time they revisit a topic. This is particularly challenging for those who utilize AI as a long-term strategic partner for projects, research, product development, or progressive decision-making.

Proposal
Introduce a feature that allows the model to retrieve, on demand, context from previous conversations within the same account. This retrieval could be selective, enabling the user to choose which conversation they want the AI to review before continuing.

Why Would This Be a Game-Changer?

  1.  Enhanced Efficiency: Eliminates the need to repeatedly re-explain everything, making interactions significantly more productive.

  2.  Reduced Continuous Computational Load: Unlike an always-on memory model, this system would function on demand, minimizing storage and processing costs.

  3.  More Fluid User Experience: For users working on long-term projects, this feature would make ChatGPT even more useful and intuitive.

  4.  User-Controlled Memory: Instead of continuous storage, this option would give users autonomy over what the AI can access and when.

  5.  Maintained Security and Privacy: Context retrieval could be designed to ensure compliance with data privacy policies, restricting storage durations or ensuring there is no unrestricted access.

Potential Technical Implementations

Manual User Activation: At the start of a new conversation, a button or command could allow users to “import context” from past chats.

Previous Sessions List: Users could see saved conversations and choose which one they want the AI to review.

Automatic Summarization: If accessing the full conversation is computationally expensive, the AI could generate a summary of past interactions to quickly recontextualize itself.
