All of a sudden that little pencil icon that used to show up that would let me edit is just gone. I don’t know what happened to it

Several community members have suggested workarounds to deal with the current situation. You can find one particularly interesting suggestion linked as ‘solution’ below.
So I’m not going crazy! Thank goodness it isn’t just me! Editing still works on the mobile but I don’t like to use it because you can’t shuffle back to the original message, at least that I’m aware of. Anyone know of a way?
This is probably a new feature launched. Look at all these reply, all made within 3 hour range. And I got this ‘update’ about 5 hours ago. So it must be something they only JUST managed to mess up. (reminds me of cough, cough c.ai)
Me too😭 I can’t edit AND THAT FEATURE is why I use chat gpt over other ai apps. I’m hoping they won’t make it a premium feature to grab money, if they do the only result will be that their app and website loses a ton of people
right, Its easier, faster and more precise change a few words to get that output wanted… or maybe you got to a branch of something and didn’t like that, you can just go up and change the message
Same , the edit aka pencil icon is gone now too. In addition to the repeat button . Hopefully, OpenAI can fix those problems fast . And not to make the edit and repeat features premium . Sicne it helps me and other users a lot compare to other AI platforms.
I have the same issue. This feature is completely essential. Super unfortunate that this happened now. I am working on a blog post and I am basically prevented from being able to continue working on it since when the answer from ChatGPT is off, I have to ask again and then it completely explodes my chat with irrelevant information, which then in turn completely confuses the AI. I need the edit button back now! I have the payed version, and IMO it is super expensive, so this is not something that I would take lightly on. In my opinion this is a severity 0 escalation and they should have an engineer on this ASAP!
Update: I found a workaround. You can make the message tools visible using the browser developer tools. Right click the message you want to edit and make the tools visible by unticking the hidden CSS rule:
