This feature was previously available, but it was deprecated in the latest update (5 hours ago) – you can now edit ONLY your last message. This change significantly disrupts multiple workflows, including mine. If the current decision remains in place, I will have no choice but to cancel my subscription and look for an alternative service.
If you are also affected, please consider leaving a comment to help bring attention to this issue.
Really Openai, we all here are not asking you for a big thing, we have paid for service, are we just a number on spreadsheet to you?, or do we even get counted in a valued customers?, we all here understand to fix the thing it need time, we also understand you are trying to update the system and we agree to your policies and terms that it’s in your hand how to shape your policies how to shape the system you build. But you can’t just change the basic necessity of the platform and make it retroactive.
You are literally *curtailing our right to access the data* you are still storing on your servers. It feel totally discriminatory because while some have these features, a huge group of us are just… logged out. If I accidentally send a ‘hi’ in a thread I can’t even edit a previous message anymore? That’s not an update, that’s a ‘functional regression’.
You are still saving our branched responses on your backend I can see them in the search bar so why block the UI we need to reach them?
Show us some basic professional courtesy. we have been following up for days and all we get a generic we can’t fix it boat answers or total ghosting. We aren’t asking for much.
Just *give us a functional work around or a way to get our branched property back.* We are paying for a professional tool, not to be logged out of our own history.
If you truly can’t restore the UI navigation for our account, then *provide us with a functional full tree PDF or HTML export that actually include all our branched message history or historical iterations;* giving us a flat file that hides branched message history is a denial of our ownership rights.
As I see it this change is popular with no one as it has tooken away a core feature on exchange for being slightly faster something that is ultimately pointless as no one I have interacted with when ask is happy with this change and if we aren’t going to get a response stating that they will change it back then that is just proof that they do not care what their customers want
This is why I use this site, I am very upset by the change and the way I use this will be a massive downfall.
I would prefer to stay because I have all my stuff in this history but I will move on if this isnt fixed. Please fix it
I just learned Claude can do what you are cutting, and its working great. Again I would perfer to stay due to all my saved history and stories. But I will switch if this is nit fixed
I am going through that issue as well. I find it deeply annoying and upsetting because it is a simple feature and has always been avaliable before as long as I have used chatgpt and I really don’t see what possible benefit there is in removing it.
It’s really annoying that we can only edit the last message. Gemini is like that too, so I only use ChatGPT and Claude. Now ChatGPT is like that too, so the only choice left is Claude.
I edit messages constantly to explore different concepts, ask tangential questions, and manage context. Removing it completely broke my workflow. It is the one reason I don’t use Gemini.
Hundreds of people are complaining about the same thing on Reddit. Please put the feature back.
I use ChatGPT to mess around with hypotheticals and worldbuilding.
I change details often, which means I have to go back earlier in the story and continue from that point… Something I can’t do without branching the chat now, which significantly adds clutter and clunk. (I have made so many branches. My chat list is filled to the brim with branches.)
I feel sad and disappointed. The drive to continue is mostly gone, already hurt by the ads I now see; Ads, something I already associate with interruption, clutter, and greedy company practice.
If someone could find the reason behind this change, please post it. Thanks!
Edit: Apparently the reason was for increased speed in loading conversations. I understand the need to go faster, but I’m sure I’m not the only one who doesn’t care that much about loading times… If you want to reduce loading times, do it in a way that doesn’t affect/remove essential features. Editing old messages is, to me, one of them.
In my opinion, the action OpenAI has taken, regardless of the motive they gave us, feels limiting– Like multiple doors have just closed I can’t open again.
Please undo this update and allow us to edit messages again. Thank you.
@NightShade_Orange To make conversations load faster, apparently. But what OpenAI seems to have forgotten is that nobody cares how fast the conversation loads if they’re not able to have the conversation they want to have.
I use it for creative writing, since Chat is not perfect and sometimes misunderstands context after a while, this feature is essential for me. I don’t care, if I have to wait a few minutes for a message as I craft a whole world. At least give us the option to toggle it on/off..
