Deleting Images - ChatGPT Library

Hi OpenAI team and Developer Community!

In my experience using ChatGPT, generating creative works that inspire and map out visual designs is a very helpful tool! While the library on ChatGPT is useful for a comprehensive view of image generations from all conversations, deleting specific images requires you to delete the entire conversation where the image was generated. This would mean any other images created in the conversation would also be deleted, so trying to organize the library becomes an inconvenience when many related generations are in the same conversation. Even though it is possible to create separate chats to generate individual images, it still proves to be inefficient when the user may want to generate them under similar/related prompts in one space. So when creating them under a single chat, it becomes extremely inconvenient if some are not needed or unwanted later in the chat, but the user is unable to delete them specifically without deleting the whole thing.

I suggest a feature be added where the image can be directly deleted from the library, rather than having to delete the whole conversation where it originated from. It allows users to selectively choose what they want to get rid of without deleting the images that they want to keep. This helps a lot with organizing the library feature in ChatGPT, and for me personally, it would help silence that nagging feeling from looking at an image that doesn’t belong or hold up to standard with other creative and beautiful works generated by ChatGPT.

Thank you for listening!

You can try the chrome extension ( ChatGPT Library Exporter ) and download all the images generated by ai with one click so that you don’t have to worry about losing data.

its not the loss its the extra junk thats the issue sometimes (a lot) images appear wrong yet stuck in the library what a waste of space

please add an option to delete images in library..

please also add an option of library of uploads or uploaded photos. this way we can reupload the file to a new chat when the old one is too long

I’m definitely in agreement here.

In my case, I had already deleted the conversations where the images were created, and now those images just sit in the Library as broken entries with no way to remove them.

It’s clear there needs to be a way to delete individual images directly – not only for better organization, but also to clean up situations where conversations are gone but the images still linger.

Having a simple “Delete” option on each image would make managing the Library a lot more efficient, especially for users who do creative work or want to keep their collections organized without extra clutter.

Appreciate the work so far, and hope to see this kind of functionality added soon.

I agree. Having to delete an entire conversation just to get rid of an image is dumb imo. The piecemeal approach to so many things makes it hard to manage a lot with ChatGPT but I still find it all so amazing that it’s hard to complain too much

delete the chat that u generated the image

True, agree with you, We need that option, Like Sora have.

I agree. @OpenAI_Support please add a feature to delete images from the Library, rather than the entire source Chat. The current “option” is far from efficient, requiring cumbersome searching, only to possibly be faced with the conundrum–delete the undesired image and lose information I would prefer to keep, or keep all information and remain stuck with the undesirable image. Frustrating! TIA! :fox: :slightly_smiling_face:

Actually, this thread is not about preserving the images. It’s about deleting unwanted images from our Library.

I just sent this message via mysterious smiling icon in the lower-right corner of https://help.openai.com/ (Guess what? That icon is intended to represent a “Help Agent”. Ever heard of UX Design Testing?)

The Help Agent Bubble also has a terrible UX design, you have to go through a frustrating cycle of circular instructions (like the help bubble suggesting you use the help bubble!), but eventually I got past all the horrible navigation obstacles and left this message which echoes xxSmurfxx’s seed post for this thread:

Request for Per-Image Deletion in User’s ChatGPT Library

Context:
Users of ChatGPT who generate or upload images during their conversations can later view those images at https://chatgpt.com/library. This library is convenient for reviewing past work, but it currently lacks any way to delete individual images.

Current Limitation:

  • There is no option to delete, hide, or manage individual images directly from the Library UI.
  • The only tedious workaround is to delete the entire chat thread in which the image originated. That is extremely inconvenient for users who have dozens, or hundreds of threads. It becomes a tedious chore to locate the proper thread, and there may be very useful content in that same thread that we do not want to delete – just the image! Even thread deletion is not always sufficient, as when the image was uploaded in some unsaved or temporary chat session.
  • There are also no file organization features in the Library (no Rename action, tags, folders, metadata, search, etc.)

Why You Should Fix This

  • Even we, as lowly consumer users, deserve basic control over our content for privacy, clutter reduction, and organization.
  • Images can be deeply personal, experimental, or obsolete, and many are not worth the storage they consume on your servers.
  • The absence of any deletion feature undermines our trust in ChatGPT’s storage transparency.

What We Are Requesting:
Add per-image and multiple file deletion functionality within the ChatGPT Library.

Ideally, this would include:

  1. Right-click or hover over any image, and the context action to “Delete” should appear just like you have Download and Share today.
  2. It would be better to provide a batch-delete tool or tag-based selection.
  3. Essential: A confirmation dialog before deletion to prevent accidental loss.
  4. It would also help to have a filter to sort those images by date or source chat. That would make Library cleanup easier.

Bonus Points:

  • Allow us to hide or archive images we don’t want to delete but prefer to remove from the main grid view.
  • On right-click, display the date generated, source chat title, and GPT model/Project.

Sometimes ChatGPT generates images that have too much detail or have wrong detail, I would like this

Totally agree that the ability to delete selected images from the library makes the library useful especially for multiple revisions in the same conversation. Otherwise it is a case of hiding in plain view, like when the kitchen drawer is so full that everything inside might as well be lost.

YES! I can’t believe this isn’t already a feature. But then, not much at AI makes any sense.

slow because too much image in library?

I agree…since I get a lot that could be deleted but unsure what else is going to be deleted that are perfect
