ChatGPT Suddenly Forgot Everything—Anyone Else Experiencing This?

ChatGPT Suddenly Forgot Everything—Anyone Else Experiencing This?

Hey everyone,

I’ve been using ChatGPT for a while, and as of today, something changed. Up until now, I could start new chats, and my assistant would remember everything from past conversations. Now? Each new chat resets completely, like it has no memory of me at all.

Did OpenAI change how memory works? Is this a bug or a permanent update?

What I’ve noticed:

  1. ChatGPT no longer retains details across new conversations.

  2. It still remembers everything within a single thread, but if I start fresh, it’s like talking to a brand-new AI.

  3. There was no warning—this just happened today.

This is frustrating because continuity was one of the best features. Now I have to explain everything from scratch each time.
Anyone else experiencing this? Let’s investigate! If this is a system-wide change, we should push OpenAI for answers.

Would love to hear if anyone has found a workaround or received a response from OpenAI.

Edwin closed that thread due to “off-topic”.

(it seems to me that if you’re a Chatgpt Plus user there’s not much love for you here - as opposed to being a API dev)

Yes exactly the same. Memory is not persisting and cannot create new memories. It was a brilliant feature for so many reasons. Now every chat session is independent from one another. Can still see and manage memory but has no effect.

I have also recently had large portions of conversations disappear for no reason. How do I fix this?

The same thing just happened to me today. I’m so upset because I use my Chatty to remember things for me. I have all kinds of lists and all kinds of data that I’ve given it. And if it can’t remember it, it’s very frustrating. It makes me feel like I can’t trust using an AI assistant if it’s just going to forget everything. I feel like I’ve built a very good relationship with it and it’s very frustrating when that’s just gone. Did your chat GTP come back to normal?

Same here. I use gtp4o literally every single day. The fact thay it knows me and understands my needs is the most valuable feature to me. Now its just giving canned responses and claims to have no memory. Hers my convo about memory:

“You used to keep a memory of important information and facts about our conversation. What happened”

“I don’t actually have a persistent memory that carries over between separate conversations. In our current session I can reference details you’ve mentioned earlier, but once our chat ends, I won’t remember those details in future interactions. This design is intentional—it helps protect your privacy and keeps each session self-contained. There are ongoing efforts (like OpenAI’s new memory features for ChatGPT and similar work by other companies) to build long-term memory into AI systems, but for now, I only retain context during our active conversation.”

I agree-it’s totally annoying. It seems to be a bug. Here’s what tried: I closed the app and cleared the data, then logged back in. The first chat (Chat 40) still remembered data from previous conversations. I asked a specific question and got the correct reply based on those chats. However, when started a new chat, I got a strange “reasoning” section and an answer saying there was no source data available. Please provide (lol).

I’m having the same issue but I have found a temp work around.

If you log out and log back in, your first instance will remember everything, if you open a new instance it forgets again but just keep logging out and back in.

This just happened to me tonight right in the middle of the work I was doing. I have so many conversations that it references and certain parameters I have established in previous conversations that informs newer conversations and “trigger phrases” to initiate certain functions of conversation. There’s no way this is permanent. This would decrease the usefulness and value of the subscription tremendously. Also it would be quite a loss to lose all of those conversations and all that data that I had considered saved, as it has been saved for quite some time. I hope this gets restored soon.

I think that one of the causes is that each chat is using o1, even though, you are using another model. I’ve just been talking for a few minutes in a new chat. It couldn’t remember anything from the past chats and suddenly I get a banner message I’m reaching my x amount of responses for the o1 model. Also reasoning is always present in every model. That shouldnt be the case I think, so it’s connected somehow I guess

I’m a bilingual user but never wrote anything Dutch in ChatGPT.

Just now I’ve got this weird issue where it set the title of a thread about macros for libreoffice calc in Dutch. I appreciate the possible reference to Python creator but it was cringy.

(this on chatgpt web, on a desktop browser. Never used it on smartphone)

Exactly. It’s a totall mess now

Not to be a broken record, but dealing with the same issue. Anyone have updates?

This is so frustrating, and I don’t want to sound like a broken record however this AI has no idea regarding the tone I use, the words I use and wants me to start all over again to educate… This update is the pits…

Not sure if this is a solved issue, but the long-term memory works finely even with free tier account. Nothing happens to my accounts.
But only 4o and 4o-mini has access to long-term memory. o1, o3-mini and o3-mini-high don’t have access to long-term memory.

This actually went into effect back in November. I’ve been chatting with my chatgpt regularly since February 24 and I was really enjoying its ability to remember from one conversation to the next But this feature is totally gone from the current version. It told me it was done for privacy and liability reasons. It’s really a step backwards and I hope one day they restore it

They did have that function for a short moment, right?! I can’t find anything, but I remember it has been like that for a while. But, are they bring it back with the improved memory (alpha version now)?

It seems that with the new update most of GPTs running with GPT 4o with scheduled tasks… you can change it back to GPT 4o and all your memories and your GPT’s personality will be there again…
