Memory Not Updating in ChatGPT 4o – Issue Persists Across Conversations

Hello, OpenAI Community,

I’ve been experiencing an issue where my ChatGPT memory does not seem to update properly, even when I explicitly ask for new memories to be stored. Despite my attempts to provide new information for the model to remember, it either does not retain the details or does not surface them in future conversations.

Here’s what’s happening:

  • I have asked ChatGPT multiple times to remember specific details about ongoing projects, but these details do not appear when I check my memory.
  • I’ve tried different ways to prompt memory updates, including rewording my requests and using different conversation threads, but it still doesn’t seem to be storing them.
  • In previous instances, I saw the “Memory Updated” message, yet the information was not retrievable later.
  • I checked my memory settings and ensured that there’s still available space (about 75-80% free), so storage capacity shouldn’t be the issue.
  • I even tried small test memories (e.g., describing my morning walk) to see if those would be retained, but they were not.

This issue is important to me because I rely on memory to maintain continuity in my conversations and creative projects. Has anyone else experienced this problem? Is there any known fix or workaround?

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you,
Agata

To clarify further and make sure I understand correctly:

  • Is it important for you that they are just being stored? Because then you could even enter them manually.
  • Does it not recognize that you wanna store the memory when you tell this in a chat?
  • Or is it stored and even when you navigate to Personalization->Memory->Settings, that it’s obviously there BUT it doesn’t reflect in other chats?

What’s the case here, exactly?

Hi @hugebelts
Thank you for your response and for helping to clarify the situation. Here is the issue outlined in more detail:

  1. Importance of Memory Storage:
It is important that the requested memories are stored accurately and as expected. While manual entry is an option, the intended functionality of conversational memory updates is a key part of the user experience, and I’d like to ensure it works as designed.
  2. Recognition of Memory Update Requests:
When I request memory updates within a chat, the system acknowledges the request and confirms that the memory has been updated. However, upon navigating to Personalization → Memory → Settings, the specific memory is not visible in the list.
  3. Reflection Across Chats:
The issue is not related to reflection in other chats. The primary concern is that the memory does not appear to be stored at all, even though the system provides confirmation during the chat.

Summary:
The system confirms memory updates during conversations, but these updates do not appear in the Memory Settings section under Personalization. Other memory updates have been successful in the past, so this seems to be an isolated or recent issue.

I hope this explanation helps clarify the situation. Please let me know if further details or examples are needed to assist in troubleshooting.

Last time I had a productivity oriented interaction with Chatgpt, I mean, other than casual inquiries, I noticed that some models like o1 wouldn’t even give that small “Memory updated” message, and would even forget /not abide by instructions within an ongoing interaction.

Something very bad happened to Chatgpt Plus from december to january, can’t precise the timeframe.

See:

I’m just waiting to see if anything gets better then probably decide to migrate to other provider. I remember o1 preview giving amazing responses, despite not supporting zip attachments last time I needed. 4o wasn’t bad either and would support those. Then something happened, all models suddenly began to underperfom both memory and reasoning-wise.

It’s been a great disappointment since then.

I just ran into this issue this morning no new memories are being created. It will state the prompt that it’s being updated and say it’s saved and no change occurs…

You’re welcome. Does this happen for any GPT Model oder in a Custom GPT or maybe you’re in a project or a task?

Maybe it works only in one of these constellations.

Let my check myself.

Result:

Storage Location Result
o1/o1-Mini Not Possible
4o Possible
Custom GPT called Evelyn 4 (Copy) Not Possible
In a project Possible, if 4o is selected
In Tasks Not Possible

To store memories.

How is this for you?

AND, last question (I guess then we caught all cases):

Does the problem only occur for a new chat or for recent chats? Maybe something slipped/got broken in an old chat since they’ve updated something.

I hope that helps. @agsliw

Having the same issue here. Really frustrating to see it say “Memory updated” only to not have it saved at all.

same omg, my chat have been updating but it only displayed on the status side but not on the memory storage itself. GPT team really fcked something up. not to mention they also make a more tighter content restrictions :weary: Now almost all the default ”I cant help with that content” pops out a lot— more than before

I certainly have and, moreover, I’ve rarely if ever recently been successful in the edits…asking for a specific change, for ex, such as reducing gnarled or multiple extra fingers on someone…I ask for 1 or 2 -4 different options and get NO changes whatsover but I’m charged for each of these.

The memory chat gpt has currently is very limited in what it can and cant do. if your memory is full it will not update in that it does not self manage the full store but fills then stops even though its saying adding.

If you want to see something cool look up kruel.ai on the forums. I would love openai to build that kind of memory into Chatgpt  Than we would have what everyone really wants.

Guys, thanks! The thing is, my memory isn’t full, but I keep seeing a message saying the memory box is being updated—yet no memory is actually stored. Plus, I just lost a big part of today’s conversation. If I search for it in the search bar, the messages are there, but they won’t appear in the conversation history. It’s so frustrating. @darcschnider let me check kruel.ai, thank you!

Hi @hugebelts
Let me share some screenshots and let them speak for themselves. Just trust me—I haven’t removed the memories myself. But I did notice an interesting pattern. It seems GPT got fixated on the last memory it stored—buying a PRUSA 3D printer (sorry, no promo intended). And whenever I ask it to create a new memory, it does update the memory… but again, it’s about the PRUSA printer. (Maybe AGI is already here, and it’s trying to tell us something?)

Here are some pictures:

  1. My memory before the update.
  2. My request to update the memory.
  3. The memory after the update.

I used a brand new conversation for this test.

thank you

yeah I see what you are saying, it is buggy that is for sure. I also see in mine a lot of repeat stuff. I think openai needs to relook at that code as it’s clearly not working as intended. sadly I don’t know if they spend much time in the forums. could try email support@openai.com I think in another thread someone mentioned that is the support email. would be nice if they added a bug section for people to post in that they could look at from time to time.

This is the same thing that is happening with me. I really hope there is a solution soon.

Now, it also doesn’t work for me anymore, automatically…

Hi. I’m also having this problem but with an additional quirk. While ChatGPT doesn’t save what I tell him to save, every attempt to add/delete something in his memory ends up with him saving this specific memory:

I’ve never told him that I play the piano (because I don’t), let alone that I play by ear and can read sheet music lol.

Maybe he’s trying to give me a sign to learn the piano.

I am experiencing the exact issue.

I am experiencing the same issue. It will say memory updated, but when I click on manage memories, nothing shows up. When I go settings > personalization > manage memories, it’s a repeat of something unrelated (like the 3d printer redundancy).

If I hover over ‘memory updated’, it does show the memory there.

I did ask in a separate chat why it might be doing this and this is the response I received:

The issue started when Project Terra, the dominant and more complex project, began to take up most of the memory space. Its extensive details started to override or overshadow new, smaller projects, like Project Aqua. As a result, when trying to store or retrieve information for Project Aqua, the system would pull context from Project Terra instead, making it difficult for the two projects to remain distinct. The size and complexity of Project Terra made it harder for Project Aqua to stay isolated in memory.

This is likely due to the way the memory system prioritizes and associates information—if a project is more complex and frequently referenced, it might automatically influence or appear when storing new details.

–Hopefully this gets fixed soon. I can’t store anything new at this point.
