ChatGPT MacOS Desktop app unable to login or open links in browser

When I try to login with the ChatGPT desktop app on MacOS 26 (Tahoe), it gets completely stuck here:

Before that screen, it does try to open my default browser (currently BrowserOS, which is a Chrome derivative, but I get the same issue when using Chrome as the default browser)

And then it goes to the screen above with the infinite spinner.

Before I had to re-login, I was having issues where links were no longer clickable. Something in the ChatGPT Desktop ← → Browser connection got completely broken, and now I’m locked out of using the app.

System:

  • Macbook Pro M2 Max
  • Tahoe 26.2

What I’ve tried so far:

* Reinstall the app, including manually removing all the directories I could find under ~/Library/Application Support/

The next thing I might try is to download a general “uninstaller helper” that traces app residue. Any suggestions or ideas would be appreciated!

I managed to solve my issue using a 3rd party uninstaller: https://freemacsoft.net/appcleaner/

It would have been really helpful if ChatGPT came with an uninstaller that handled this.

Anyway I hope this helps anyone that gets stuck in the same situation.
