I’ve had a ChatGPT account since September 2024 (even though I just created an “OpenAI” account today to report this problem; I didn’t know the two were separate) and since September, for 4 months now, data exporting has refused to work.
Initially, after exporting, and after the ChatGPT site said that my data was successfully exported, I would get an email where the “Download data export” button would open a blank page and nothing would happen. Since December, however, the “Download data export” button opens a page that isn’t blank, but it is still a very basic page, basically an error page, with tabs at the top left saying “JSON”, “Raw Data”, and “Headers”. The “JSON” tab page simply reads detail: "Not Found."
I would really love to be able to export my chat data for back ups, as I’ve been using ChatGPT regularly for 4 months now, and, just in case something happened to my account, I would be very appreciative to have my data saved locally. And yet, 4 months have passed and I haven’t been allowed a single backup, despite several attempts.
Does anyone else face this problem? Can we expect that this will ever be fixed?
I’ve been experiencing the same issue since November 2024. I’ve tried exporting multiple times, but I haven’t received any emails. Forums indicate that this problem occurred in May 2023 as well.
Having the same issue. What’s strange is that I get the success message immediately despite having lots of data to export, but the email never arrives.
same problem here. been using chatgpt to help with adhd and have tracked lots of htings on there. need to get an export fie so i ca sift through and see all ofmy medical appointments ive talked about on there. all i get in the download link is a tan with a checkbox saying {pretty print} and {“detail”:“Not found.”} please help!!
I wanted to share my recent experience in case it helps others who may be running into the same problem.
When I requested a data export, I received the email link, but clicking it only gave the error: detail: not found.
The problem was that I had logged into the ChatGPT app with my Naver account, but into the web version with my Google account.
The export link was requested from my Naver account, but it was actually tied to the Google account I was logged into. That’s why the export failed — I never requested the export using my Google account.
Once I logged into the web version with my Naver account (the same one I used in the app), the export worked correctly.
Takeaways:
If you get detail: not found when downloading data, check that you’re logged into the correct account (the same one you used for the export request).

For me it stopped working few weeks ago, I do not know why. But I was able to access the archive from my phone, on PC is doesn’t work, detail not found, but on my phone download luckily worked. I access via VPN, which might play a role, try different approaches, from phone, from PC, via VPN etc. Form app, from desktop app, from web.
I’ve been doing the same since 2023. I just did my most recent export today in January 2026, and it doesn’t seem to open any at all, as the previous ones did. I asked ChatGPT (not OpenAI), and it said that the newer ChatGPT exports sometimes do not generate valid chat HTML files and that it has been happening since late 2025.
Hopefully, OpenAI can get this fix. I really want to back up my chats, not only that. I also like ot organize my cats by year and month in my bookmarks. Having these exports is a huge help where i can know what date the chat was created
I’ve been using ChatGPT since 2023, and i was able to get most of my early chats exported sand saved now i want to finish it with this recent export.
Yep - worked me; was getting that error, so logged out of my ChatGPT accounts, logged in as the one where I exported from (logged in using Chrome rather than the app), re-clicked the download button in the export email and it worked. Thanks!
