ChatGPT app for macOS doesn't work on my laptop

Macbook pro with an Intel cpu. Sonoma 14.2.1

I downloaded the .dmg and installed the app, however it won’t run and the icon is crossed out

Same problem.

Please tell me that the app will be supported on Intel Macs.

Unfortunately ,the app is only supported on apple silicon.

I know it’s only currently supported on Apple Silicon, what I am asking is whether that will be fixed in a subsequent release.

Seems like bs to me…
I’ve been using GPT as a desktop app on my macbook pro for a while now.
I’m using the chrome version vs. the safari version because there is a chrome extension that can add the talking version of the app.

Well I am really disappointed that the app doesn’t support macs with intel chips. That seems like a compile flag issue vs an actual hardware requirement problem. I hope they fix this and release an update soon. I really want to use the desktop app.

I completely agree, especially since we’ve been led to believe that we were going to get it. They have wasted days of my life waiting for nothing. Yikes.

agree.
apple is bs.
openAI is once again , not so open after all…

Apple Silicon has been out for more than three years — surely it makes sense to focus development time/resources on Apple Silicon rather than old Intel devices?

This sucks! Been waiting for this and, like most, don’t want to go out and buy a new Mac. This needs to be fixed!

This will be updated eventually, I’m sure. But yeah It’s like taking a half chewed piece of meat out of a dog’s mouth… lol

The reason could conceivably be technical. Apple silicon has a powerful GPU and Neural Engine built in. For the sake of scaling multimodality it only makes sense that the new openai client app would offload its initial layers to the GPU and Neural Engine in that hardware. Thtat would enable guarantees on response times and improve user experience qualities, imho.

That said - since I have an Apple Silicon laptop but no download link from OpenAI yet - would someone be willing to help a fellow human being out in trying this thing?

(and if so note that the community software won’t let you paste a naked URL unless it’s an openAI one so you might have to insert spaces between the slashes … thanks in advance!)

I agree with your reasoning, this all makes depressing sense, but I don’t
see adding a single app as enough to justify a new hardware purchase. I
already want Apple Silicon, but I am maturely waiting until my Intel Mac
dies, or is ‘accidentally’ dropped.

When I do software development I only deal with Mac software, I no longer develop for Intel Macs. Due to their different architecture, there are many software differences making it difficult to bridge the gap. With Silicon coming out four years ago, it seems unrealistic to assume that they would make an Intel version. This is highly not relevant to OpenAI and Apple’s recent partnership as they have been working on this application for 3-5 months, long before they made a deal.

So are they recommending that we buy a new Mac? I’m using an older MacBook, so I don’t deserve it

Same here. Intel chip and really looking forward to using it

Guess, we should all be raising a petition for intel chips.

Yes, I think there are still a large number of mac users who still use Intel chips. I guess support for Intel chips will come faster than support for Windows.

Apple secretly want you to buy their Silicon Chip computers. This is a strategy to force consumers to part ways with the old and spend exuberant amount of money for the new machines. Capitalism in this case really sucks ass, especially when the economy is eating away our savings with increased inflation & interest rates.

Same here, I am really disappointed. As a first-wave open.ai supporter in my country with a Plus account as soon as it was available I would have expected that open.ai would have gone for a less elitist approach and consider the positive implications of having more users on board upon release of this new application.
i hope they will fix this soon.
