I have been looking for what other people say about this issue, but all of the solutions don’t work at all.
From my observation, I guess it may be some security rules or anti-abuse that caused this issue.
The symptom is when I ask ChatGPT a question, it will pause in the middle of the output. Sometimes it will resume after a couple of seconds of waiting. Most of the time it will just hang there and never continue. During this time, chat.openai.com
will never respond and hang there. It will not show “network error” until it actual back to work.
When it back to work, after it shows network error
, I can refresh the webpage. The full response will show up.
During the time it hanging. I can not access chat.openai.com
on any other tab in the same browser (Chrome in the demo, but all browsers have the same issue). But I can use Edge/Firefox to access it. Clear the cookies can make me back to the login page, but when I log in, it still hanging.
I tried Chrome/Edge/Firefox (On Windows), and Chrome/Safari (On MacOS). All of them can get into the same issue.
No VPN, tried the apartment network (Xfinity), school network (special lane), and 5G (Google Fi). Networks are all stable and high-speed. Located in the North-East of the US. Physical location doesn’t matter. Traveling to other States with the same problem.
The problem has bothered me more than a year since ChatGPT came out. I did not see any effort from OpenAI to fix the issue. Please take it seriously. It highly impacts my daily work. It is really annoying when I ask for the code and get half of the response. The hanging time is not predictable, sometimes a few seconds, sometimes a few minutes, and I have experienced hours of the issue. The mean of the time it gets back after one single hanging would be about 5 to 10 minutes. It could happen multiple times during one chat.
Here is the demo of the problem (why can’t I include the link in my post???): {put google drive address here}/file/d/13vW0hmhGTyryXkvZmorrWkuiMX28f46g/view?usp=sharing
