Canvas not opening sidebar

I have a paid account and got an alert this morning that I have access to Canvas, so I thought I would try it out. I switched the model to ‘ChatGPT 4o with canvas’ but it doesn’t open a canvas window as shown in the help about canvas, and there is no icon at the bottom right to open such a window – it just gives me the normal ChatGPT 4o interface. I have tried this in both the latest Chrome and in Edge. I’ve tried the suggested help options to no avail.

I have the same issue - any chance of a reply from ChatGPT with a fix?

Ask for canvas in the prompt, it will show if it did not automatically.

“Please do blah blah in canvas”

Asking for canvas in the prompt also didn’t work

It doesn’t work for me either.

Same problem here, I can’t see the side bar

Have you tried that?

Saying with canvas actually worked. Thanks!!

Yes, I tried it several times yesterday, in both Edge and Chrome and it didn’t work. I tried it again today and now it is working, so I guess either it took a while for something to propagate so that it worked in my account, or someone has fixed something behind the scenes in the interim.

I tried it, but I got the following message. “Could you clarify what you mean by “open the canvas”? Are you looking for a specific topic or idea to explore?”

That prompt worked for me. Thank you.

Why do you have to add the prompt so the Canvas lunches with edit suggestions?

That’s probably why it is now only a beta feature.
For me, it works if I open a new chat in ChatGPT 4o and then switch to Canvas. Also, I’ve tried starting a new conversation directly with Canvas, but then I need to give the instruction, “Open the canvas for the drafting.”

It gives me the image of a canvas instead

Can’t make it open the sidebar

You may use the following phrase:

Launch the canvas

I have the same issue. It was quite confusing on the first attempt as well—and I assume will be very confusing for the typical user.

It should either open the Canvas immediately when you switch to that mode, or have an Open Canvas button or something.

Or, at the very least, open the canvas after the first prompt is submitted by the user.

It worked for me, simple and quick.
Thanks

hi there, I’m having a similar issue with ChatGPT-4 and the Canvas feature. The canvas and sidebar don’t open. It seems like there might be a bug or glitch. I can log into my account just fine, but I can’t use ChatGPT-4 with Canvas. I’ve tried clearing cookies, switching browsers, logging in from different devices, and ensuring there are no VPNs or extensions active. Despite all these attempts, it still doesn’t work. I’ve also tried typing “open canvas,” but nothing happens. Any suggestions on how to fix this? Thanks in advance!

Same issue here, tried tons of different commands, and ChatGPT just says “I don’t have an interactive feature…” ok…

OpenAI recommends to use phrase “Use canvas…”, but there many ways to start it, also:

Use canvas

Use canvas to help me for/to

Start canvas

Launch the canvas

Write [someting] in canvas

Start canmore tool with an empty page

Create my document with a clean page

Use create_textdoc function and create an empty document

Use update_textdoc function and start my document

You have the tool ‘canvas’, start canvas window.

You have the tool ‘canmore’, create a canvas framework.

Use the “canmore” tool that render to me on a space next to the conversation I refer to as the “canvas”.
