Does OpenAI sell my data?
No. We do not sell your data or share your content with third parties for marketing purposes.
The above is from the Data Usage FAQ on their help page. I have opted out of them using my data for training using their opt-out form. However, I can’t find anything that states they won’t sell my content for other reasons. I am assuming that, while I opted out of improving the model, that they still retain my prompt/completion pairs, and reserve the right to sell this data for non-marketing purposes. Meaning… that in the future, OpenAI could sell my content to another company and it could end up being used in their models.
Does anyone have any insights on this?
I am talking about ChatGPT, not the API.
You could reach out to help.openai.com (bottom right corner) and leave your contact details and query for someone to contact you.
I do know that OpenAI take data privacy very seriously, but I’m not aware of any specific text related to other uses of prompts and completion text.
I think you’re good, at least on the “content” part
(a) Your Content. You may provide input to the Services (“Input”), and receive output generated and returned by the Services based on the Input (“Output”). Input and Output are collectively “Content.” As between the parties and to the extent permitted by applicable law, you own all Input. Subject to your compliance with these Terms, OpenAI hereby assigns to you all its right, title and interest in and to Output. This means you can use Content for any purpose, including commercial purposes such as sale or publication, if you comply with these Terms. OpenAI may use Content to provide and maintain the Services, comply with applicable law, and enforce our policies. You are responsible for Content, including for ensuring that it does not violate any applicable law or these Terms.
They can’t legally sell something they don’t own, don’t know about stuff like usage statistics though.
