Authentication method mismatch during account registration

I’m having an issue creating/signing into my OpenAI account with my corporate email.

I never fully completed the registration process and I never received a welcome email or confirmation email from OpenAI.

Now, whenever I try to create the account or sign in, I get this error:

“You attempted to sign in using Google, which is not the authentication method you used when registering.”

The problem is:

  • I never finished registering the account

  • I never set a password

  • I never linked another authentication provider manually

  • As soon as I enter my email, the system automatically redirects me to Google sign-in

  • I’m never given the option to create/use a password instead

So currently I’m stuck in a loop where:

  • I cannot create the account

  • I cannot reset a password

  • and I cannot log in with Google either

Has anyone experienced this before or knows how to resolve it?

This looks like an identity provider mismatch.

OpenAI’s login docs usually suggest trying every possible original method in a clean/private browser session: email/password, Google, Microsoft, Apple, etc.

Since this is a corporate email and you’re being automatically redirected to Google, I’d also ask your company/admin whether the domain is configured with SSO or managed authentication.

If you never completed registration or set a password, Support may need to inspect or clear the stuck/partial auth state. In that case you can contact support through Help.

Hey @DevDash! That login flow sounds stuck in a weird loop.

Please try this from an incognito/private window: go to chatgpt.com, type your email in the Email address field, then click Continue. Don’t start with “Continue with Google/Apple/phone.” If your organization uses SSO, you should continue through the SSO flow after that.
