Environment
- Surface: Web (Windows/Mac) & Android/iOS mobile browsers
- Browser or app version: Latest versions of Google Chrome and Brave
- Affected feature and model, if relevant: Account Authentication / Login Gateway
Bug
- What happened, and what did you expect?
My existing ChatGPT account suddenly logged out. When I click “Login” and select “Continue with Google” (using my original email:************), the system bypasses the login screen and forces me into a brand-new user sign-up flow (/about-you). If I try to fill it out, it throws a severe conflict error:This email address is already in use (error_code: duplicate_email). I expected the system to log me directly into my existing profile and chat history.
Reproduction
- Steps or a minimal example prompt:
- Go to
://chatgpt.com. - Select “Continue with Google” (or try typing email manually and clicking “Forgot Password”).
- The server skips the login check entirely and routes the browser to a pending signup state (
/create-account/passwordor/about-you). - Attempting to complete the form triggers the
duplicate_emailexception loop.
Diagnostics
- Exact error or screenshot:
This email address is already in use (error_code: duplicate_email)at the signup validation checkpoint. - When it happened (with timezone) and how often: Ongoing loop across multiple independent networks (Wi-Fi and mobile cellular data), multiple different browsers (Chrome, Brave), and separate physical devices (PC and mobile phone). This proves the bug is a server-side account mapping conflict in the backend database.
- Note: I have an active support ticket open under Case Number: ******** with agent John, but the standard automated troubleshooting steps have failed to break the loop. Seeking engineering assistance to manually clear the pending registration flag on my profile mapping.
