As far as I can see, currently it isn’t possible to search within a single conversation on the macOS app. This actually makes the app less useful than the web version of ChatGPT since it makes it harder to find specific messages in a conversation. Every time I launch a search, it only search for conversations in in the conversation list (thankfully by including the message content), but this is less useful when conversations are long and wordy.
That exact reason is why I came here today to comment.
I was so excited when I saw the macOS app only to install it and learn that I cannot search even within a chat like I can in the browser with a simple Ctrl-F making the app essentially useless to me. ![]()
Please minimally add in-chat search to the macOS app.
Better yet, ALSO provide an all-chat search that displays a results page like Google’s that takes me to exactly where in the chat the terms were found. Do that and I can honestly think of no other feature I absolutely need.
Hi,
I used ChatGPT to request a formal in Chat Find Function – specifically for the Windows app. However, I imagine this could be added to the Mac based application, the iOS version, and the Android version just as easily.
I am adding the information here to avoid being redundant by pasting in a new thread.
Have a great day!
Feature Request: In-Chat “Find” Function for the Windows Desktop Version of ChatGPT
Summary of the Request
The ChatGPT Windows desktop application currently lacks a “Find in Chat” feature that allows users to search within a single conversation. While the app offers a global search across multiple chats, users need a focused search tool to quickly locate specific words, phrases, or sections within the chat they are currently viewing.
This feature would enhance navigation, efficiency, and user experience, especially for long conversations involving research, coding, learning, or business discussions.
The Proposed Solution: Implementing an In-Chat “Find” Function
Keyboard Shortcut for Quick Access
- Users should be able to press
Ctrl + F(orCmd + Fon Mac) to open a Find Bar inside the active chat.
Search Bar for In-Chat Navigation
- A small search bar should appear at the top or bottom of the chat window.
- Users can type in a word or phrase, and ChatGPT will highlight matching results within the conversation.
Next & Previous Navigation for Found Results
- A “Next” (
) and “Previous” (
) button should allow users to cycle through all occurrences of the searched term.
Case Sensitivity & Whole Word Match Options (Optional)
- Users should be able to toggle case-sensitive searches and whole-word matches for precise results.
Highlighting Matches for Better Visibility
- All matches should be highlighted in the conversation for easy identification.
- The active match should have a stronger highlight color (e.g., yellow background) to stand out.
Works Seamlessly Across Long Chats
- Should support scrolling through long conversations to ensure users can locate older messages.
Why This Feature is Needed
Faster Navigation in Long Conversations
- Users often have detailed, multi-step discussions (e.g., software debugging, learning, business planning).
- Manually scrolling through hundreds of messages to find a specific point is time-consuming.
More Efficient Learning & Research
- Users studying or researching in ChatGPT often revisit key explanations or code snippets.
- An in-chat search function would allow them to find specific terms or concepts instantly.
Essential for Coding & Debugging
- Developers frequently ask ChatGPT for code, explanations, and fixes within a single chat.
- Searching for variable names, function definitions, or specific error messages would make debugging much easier.
Improved Productivity for Business & Documentation
- Users managing meeting notes, planning projects, or summarizing information in ChatGPT need to jump back to specific sections quickly.
- A “Find in Chat” feature would enable professionals to locate key insights or decisions made earlier in the conversation.
Expected Benefits
Time-Saving: Users no longer need to manually scroll through long chats to find specific messages.
Better User Experience: Similar to how browsers, Notepad, VS Code, and other editors handle in-document searches.
Enhanced Workflow Efficiency: Supports learning, software development, research, and business use cases.
Alignment with Modern UI Standards: Almost all text-based applications (e.g., browsers, document editors) have a find-in-text feature—ChatGPT should too.
Next Steps
OpenAI should prioritize adding an in-chat “Find” feature to the ChatGPT Windows desktop app with the following key functionalities:
- Keyboard Shortcut (
Ctrl + F/Cmd + F) - Find Bar with Search Input
- Highlighting of Matching Text
- Next & Previous Navigation (

) - Options for Case Sensitivity & Whole Word Matching
I just wanted to create a topic about the search (without generating a new response)!
bumping this - have we gotten any comment from the open AI dev team? When I search a keyword within the “search conversations” feature, I would like to be able to jump back to exactly when that word was used. Some conversations are very long, so scrolling up by hand is difficult or impossible.
edit: seems like command+F (on mac) is actually working fine within a conversation
Has anyone replied to this request? This is still MUCH needed because the little side bars that allow you to scroll back to certain moments in your comments to the bot isn’t enough. And very archaic.
It’s 2026 and this feature is still missing. They’ve now broken it for the web platform. Come on OpenAI dev team. It took over 3 years to show timestamps. Hopefully, this won’t be ignored till after 2028.
